Aston Villa completing a clever £5m deal for German star would solve a key issue at the back

Aston Villa Opinion – Why Aston Villa should sign Toni Leistner from QPR

According to a report in Birmingham Mail, Aston Villa are interested in signing Queens Park Rangers captain Toni Leistner. The bolstering of the defence is a major area to look upon in the summer window and Dean Smith’s men are keeping a close eye on the QPR leader.

As per another report in Football.London, despite arriving at Loftus Road, last summer, the German defender has made a huge impression. Hence, he has attracted interested from few teams, including Aston Villa and also Cardiff City.

It is suggested that the Birmingham-based club could be tempted to make a £5m move for the player once the transfer window reopens. Here’s why the Villans should do exactly that:

Aston Villa need reinforcements at the back

Predominantly a centre-back, Toni Leistner can play as a right-back or in defensive midfield. He has done well, considering this was his first season in English football.

The 28-year-old is a combative defender who is very strong in the air, aerial duel winning rate of 4.2 per game makes a lot of sense. Therefore, not only he can win headers in his own box, but can be a genuine threat from set-pieces near the opposition goal.

The QPR leader is more of a no-nonsense type of defender who looks to clear the danger out first, before thinking of building attacks from the back. His tackle and interception rate of 1.3 and 1.5 respectively epitomises the propensity he possesses at the back. (Whoscored.com)

All in all, Leistner is an all-around defender who could be an ideal addition to the Aston Villa team. Dean Smith’s men are expected to be short on quality centre-backs options ahead of the start of next season.

Tommy Elphick’s contract runs down in the summer, while Tyrone Mings, Kortney Hause and Axel Tuanzebe are on loan spells from other clubs. This leaves James Chester as the only option.

Conclusion

Hence, it makes sense from the club’s viewpoint to splash the cash on the QPR man, even if they manage to extend Elphick’s stay.
