Aston Villa signing this promising 23-year-old starlet for £10m would be a very shrewd investment by the club

Aston Villa opinion: Should the Villans sign Matt Target?

Aston Villa are eyeing a £10million move for Southampton left-back Matt Target, according to the Sun.

The Villans could be busy this summer as they are poised for an exciting Premier League campaign. And the Saints full-back is the latest one to get linked with the Lions.

A youth product of the Saints, Targett broke into the main team in 2014 and has been deprived of chances over the course. Moreover, he fell down the pecking order in the presence of Ryan Bertrand. Targett also had his loan spell with Fulham during the final phase of the last season.

Villans need reinforcements

The Lions relied much on their primary choice left-back Neil Taylor for the past two seasons and he has now entered his 30’s. The Welshman was also instrumental in Dean Smith’s earning promotion to England’s top-flight, making 38 appearances with four assists.

Now, the Lions want to bring a quality full-back to ease the pressure off Taylor, who is one of the hardworking players on the pitch. Targett could be a great option given his potential and young age.

The English U-21 star played 16 games in the recently concluded season and racked up a goal and three assists. Moreover, Targett is also synonymous with several positions down the left flank, while he predominantly played as a defensive midfielder for around eight games.

He holds a pass success rate of 70% with an average of 2 tackles per game (Whoscored) even with the limited opportunities.

Conclusion

Targett could lessen the burden of Welsh international Taylor and even provide some healthy competition to sustain his place. Moreover, the Saints full-back comes with an affordable price tag and the Blue and Claret army should not have any second thoughts about signing him.
