According to a report from the Telegraph, Aston Villa are close to signing defender Ezri Konsa from Brentford in a deal worth £12 million.
Ezri Konsa, who was part of England’s squad for the Under-21 European Championships earlier this summer, is free to leave Brentford after the Bees signed Leeds United centre-back Pontus Jansson at the start of the week. Aston Villa are believed to have triggered the 21-year-old’s release clause and he is set to become Dean Smith’s seventh summer signing.
The Villans have been one of the busiest teams in the summer transfer window following their promotion the Premier League, via play-offs. Dean Smith has already signed two central defenders this summer, with Kortney Hause and Tyrone Mings penning long-term deals with the club.
He was hopeful of re-signing Axel Tuanzebe for another season-long loan spell after the Manchester United defender impressed last season at Villa Park.
But that has all been put on the backseat as Villa are close to landing Ezri Konsa. Smith has experience with Konsa before after previously coaching him at Brentford, and in fact, bringing him to the club from Charlton during the 2018 January transfer window.
The 21-year-old was one of the standout performers for the Bees last term, starting all but four league games and helping Brentford finish 11th in the Championship table.
The young Englishman certainly has done enough in his debut Championship season to catch Aston Villa’s eye. Standing at 6ft tall, Konsa is strong in the air and robust in the challenge.
He is composed in possession and can bring the ball out from the back without much fuss. Combine that with his rather impressive footballing and tactical mind makes him a brilliant modern centre-back.
The England youth international exactly the type of player Aston Villa should be targeting to help reinforce their defence. They do not need a revolution at the back, which is what Smith is looking to do ahead of the gruelling Premier League campaign.

A potential combination of Mings and Konsa sounds good, even though they would be an inexperienced pair at the Premier League level. Mings was a terrific performer for the Villans in the Championship and he’ll be expected to lead Villa’s backline next season.
Konsa is young with high potential and while he is prone to mistakes, Smith will be the right manager to iron out his flaws and oversee his development.
The Villans need more depth in the defensive department and it’s why a move for Ezri Konsa makes so much sense especially before the summer window ends.
