Aston Villa opinion: The Villans should hijack Brighton’s move for Trossard

According to the Express, Aston Villa are very interested in hijacking a move for Leandro Trossard. The Genk forward has been heavily linked with a move to Brighton, with reports from Sky Sports revealing that the 24-year-old is close to an £18m move.

This would be a stunning coup by the Seagulls and one that they’ll hope will work after club record signing Alireza Jahanbakhsh’s struggles last season.

Things are clearly changing at Amex Stadium but it seems that despite how far things have progressed between the Seagulls and Trossard, Villa are still interested.

That should come as no surprise because the 24-year-old would help add another dimension for the Lions, who are finally in the Premier League after a rather haphazard three years in the Championship.

While they may have missed the direct promotion spot, Villa fought their way back via the promotion playoffs, beating Derby County in the finals. It was a rather entertaining final and one that showed just what the Lions could do.

However, with manager Dean Smith releasing not one but eight stars, they need reinforcements. That has already started with the club signing Wesley Morales, Anwar El Ghazi and Kortney Hause permanently and Jota from Birmingham City.

However, they won’t be enough and it’s where someone like Leandro Trossard enters the party. The 24-year-old has been brilliant for KRC Genk, contributing to 33 goals this season.

Out of that total, he’s netted 22 himself and it shows a massive improvement in his previous performances. Out of those 22 goals, 8 have come in the Europa League and it shows his ability to step up in a bigger tournament.

The Genk forward is a direct and rapid winger, but more importantly, Leandro Trossard is someone who loves getting into attacking positions. This has been on show on more than one occasion this season.

Despite his single-minded focus on attack, it doesn’t mean that Trossard forgets his defensive work. His defensive work-rate is as good if not at par with his offensive work-rate.

He doesn’t just press the opposition backline but uses his pace and agility to great use. It’s that work ethic and ability on the ball that makes him brilliant for any Premier League side, not just Aston Villa alone.

Conclusion

Leandro Trossard isn’t a world-class star yet but he’s just the kind of player that Aston Villa need for some inspiration. It’s been a rather impressive summer for the Lions but if they manage to sneak in an 11th-hour move for the 24-year-old, it would be the coup de grace for their season.
