Aston Villa holding onto their midfield dynamo is an absolute no-brainer amidst interest from PL giants

Aston Villa opinion: The Villans should hold onto John McGinn

According to reports in the Manchester Evening News , Aston Villa’s John McGinn has been linked with an exit to Manchester United in recent weeks. Prior to this, other clubs had also shown interest but Aston Villa must not listen to any offers and do everything they can to keep him at the club for at least another season.

McGinn had an absolutely fantastic season, which was highlighted by a thunderous left-foot volley from outside the box against Sheffield Wednesday. Often overlooked because of his teammate Jack Grealish, McGinn is just as good.

There are some who might suggest that he’s been even more impressive than Grealish. He’s got a fantastic engine, is very good at shielding the ball with his strength and has a wand of a left foot that he’s not afraid to use from range or for putting in crosses.

He scored 6 goals and had 10 assists in the championship from central midfield, which suggests that he’s not just a workhorse and has a lot of quality which would be enhanced in a better side.

Another factor on his side is the fact that he’s still 24 and is already a Scottish international. He’s capable of playing in various midfield positions, including central midfield, defensive midfield and on the left side of a 4-man midfield if required.

Aston Villa are a massive club with a very rich history and will be hoping that they no longer have to worry about promotion to the Premier League. Dean Smith has recharged this Villa side but it won’t be easy after getting rid of 8 members of the squad from last year already.

However, they have got some business done since then and will be hoping they can keep their best players from last season like McGinn at the club, with a difficult season in the Premier League coming up.

McGinn might be tempted by the lure of playing for a giant like Manchester United, who are in a rebuild of their own.

Solskjaer has highlighted that he’s looking for players with certain attributes and McGinn fits the hungry and talented profile that he’s looking for. He would also add some much-needed dynamism with Ander Herrera having left the club.

Conclusion

McGinn is well deserving of the interest he has gained in the last few months but it would be best for his development that he stay at Villa for the time being.
