According to a report from the Birmingham Mail, Aston Villa are expected to be ‘quiet’ during the January transfer window, with a winger acquisition the most likely move.
The Villans were very busy during the past summer window, bringing in 12 players to help boss Dean Smith following promotion from the Championship. Some of those have impressed, such as Tyrone Mings, Bjorn Engels, Marvelous Nakamba and Douglas Luiz and Tom Heaton, while Wesley Moraes, Mahmoud Trezeguet and Frederic Guilbert have blown hot and cold.
Having invested heavily before the start of the 2019/20 Premier League campaign, Aston Villa are planning a quiet January transfer window.
However, the report adds that Villa’s most likely signing is a new winger, with Dean Smith perhaps looking for more quality out wide and some competition for the likes of Jota, Trezeguet and Anwar El Ghazi.
Back in August, Marca (h/t the Birmingham Mail) had claimed Aston Villa were keen on signing Celta Vigo winger Pione Sisto and had a €10m bid accepted, only for the player to reject a move to England. Having stayed put at Celta Vigo, the Denmark international has struggled to break into the first-team this season with just three La Liga starts to his name till date.
With Pione Sisto not a guaranteed starter at the Spanish club, Aston Villa must try their luck again to sign him.
Sisto struggled as Celta barely dodged relegation last season but in the 2017/18 season, he produced 5 goals and 9 assists in La Liga. He is an exciting yet erratic winger for whom consistency remains massively vague. The Kampala-born star may have struggled for regular opportunities at Celta this season but there’s no doubting his potential.
A left-winger by trade, the Denmark international is also adept at operating down the right and through the middle as a No.10. Sisto can easily slot in behind Wesley to support the striker or go out on the left, thus adding the much-needed quality and edge that Villa have lacked from the wide areas this season.
The former FC Midtjylland man would be a great asset to Smith’s squad. Though it may take time for him to settle, he could prove to make a difference in Villa’s dull season given his ability and understanding of the game.
At the age of 24, Sisto must take the next step now if he wants to succeed at the highest level and a move to Villa would allow him to showcase his talent at the top level and it would also help him develop as a footballer.
The Villans need more quality in the wide areas and the Denmark international would provide plenty of that whilst adding some much-needed sharpness and flair to Smith’s attack as well.
