Ashley Cole vs Leighton Baines: The World Cup Race Is On!

The Verdict

Going by the numbers, it becomes clear that Baines is the hands down winner when it comes to offensive output. Defensively, both Baines and Cole are equally good, although Cole has a reputation as a defensive full-back compared to Baines who is much more attacking in nature. Keeping that in perspective, Baines has performed really well in the last couple of seasons in terms of his defensive duties.

Given the fact that scoring goals has been one of the major problems for England under Roy Hodgson, having a player like Baines, who has the ability to create chances down the left hand side, in the line-up will benefit England immensely, whilst not losing out on the defensive solidity offered by Ashley Cole. Adding Baines’ lethal free-kicks to the mix only tips the scales more in his favor.

The decision of whom to give the starting berth seems clear as day, but will the man who matters, Roy Hodgson, decide likewise?
