According to BBC, Arsene Wenger has decided to step down as Arsenal manager at the end of the season. Someone who revolutionised English football, Wenger has been at Arsenal’s helm since 1996.

He has won three Premier Leagues, a record seven FA Cups and 6 Community Shields, as well as overseeing the move from Highbury to Emirates Stadium in 2006.

The 68-year-old Frenchman last lifted the Premier League 14 years ago but his success and impact on English football have made him one of the game’s most iconic figures of the modern era.

It’s been a period full of highs and lows for Wenger but in the last two decades, many players came to North London and became legends of the game under the guidance of the Frenchman.

Here we take a look at Arsenal’s best XI under Arsene Wenger.

David Seaman (GK)

In a 13-year spell at Arsenal, Seaman established himself as the No.1 between the sticks and won three league titles and four FA Cups.

Seaman was experienced, a proven winner and was a goalkeeper with superb reflexes, helping the Gunners win a lot of games. His sheer ability to save penalties and make saves out of nowhere made him a legend.

Lauren (RB)

Lauren arrived at Arsenal from Mallorca in the summer of 2000 and soon established himself as the first-choice right-back under Wenger.

He was one of the first names on the team-sheet in the 2001-02 double season and played a pivotal part in Arsenal’s ‘Invincibles’ campaign.

Lauren was an attacking full-back who loved to overlap and link up with the wingers. Defensively, his positional awareness was really good and he left Arsenal in 2007.

 

 

Tony Adams (CB)

Adams was a true leader and found the perfect manager in Wenger to take his game to next level. He was a rock at the back, a top professional, and a reliable player who expected nothing but 100% from his teammates in every game.

Adams led Arsenal to four league titles and three FA Cups before retiring in 2002 and entering into football management a year later.

 

Sol Campbell (CB)

Campbell’s arrival on a free transfer from London rivals Tottenham Hotspur remains as one of the best deals ever in the history of the game. Although it was a controversial move, it bore rich fruits for Wenger and Arsenal.

Campbell became a priceless asset for Arsenal as the defender went on to become an ever-present figure in the ‘Invincibles’ team.

 

 

Ashley Cole (LB)

Cole came through the youth ranks and was given his first-team debut at the age of 18. He went on to become the best left-back in the world, helping the Gunners lift two Premier League titles and three FA Cups before moving to Chelsea.

 

Patrick Vieira (CM)

A leader and an inspirational figure, Vieira became a classic ‘Wenger’ success story. A relatively unknown name, who was struggling for game time as a young player at Milan, Vieira became a cult hero at Arsenal for his combative style of play.

Vieira soon took over the captain’s armband and led the side that went on to become the ‘Invincibles’.

 

 

Cesc Fabregas (CM)

Signed as a 16-year-old from Barcelona’s La Masia in 2003, Fabregas went on to become a fan favourite at Arsenal. His energetic and solid displays in the midfield soon saw him become a first-team regular. The Spaniard remains one of Wenger’s biggest success stories.

 

Robert Pires (LW)

Pires was a creative player with a keen eye for goal. He developed gradually and once he strengthened up, the Frenchman was a treat to watch.

 

 

Freddie Ljungberg (RW)

Ljungberg was one of the vital cogs in Wenger’s Invincibles side. His creativity was matched by a fantastic knack for goals from wide midfield.

The Sweden international’s combination of speed, guile and technique made him such a fantastic player as helped the Gunners lift two Premier League titles and a hat-trick of FA Cups.

 

 

 

 

Thierry Henry (ST)

Does Thierry Henry need an introduction? Signed as a winger from Juventus, Henry was transformed into a centre-forward by Wenger.

Henry is Arsenal’s all-time leading scorer having notched up 228 goals across two spells with the club. A plunderer of exceptional goals, the Frenchman won 7 major honours with the Gunners.

Dennis Bergkamp (CAM)

Bergkamp led by example on the pitch. His creativity, crisp passing and all-round technical brilliance saw Wenger’s teams become so dominant and brilliant to watch.

The Dutchman scored a truckload of goals but his playmaking abilities were simply top-notch which became an ideal outlet for all his fellow attackers. He was a perfectionist in everything that he did and hung up his boots in 2006.
