Arsenal Opinion: Why Arsenal should make a move for Walter Kannemann

The Daily Mail and Mirror has reported that Arsenal are interested in making a move for Gremio star Walter Kannemann, as Unai Emery looks to reinforce his defense. While they are a club in transition, Arsenal have still managed to do relatively well in the Premier League and currently sit in fourth position.

But not everything has gone their way, with injuries playing a part in their defensive issues this season.

The addition of former Borussia Dortmund centre-back Sokratis Papastathopoulos has made a big difference but there is only so much he can do. Injuries to both Hector Bellerin and Rob Holding have adversely affected Arsenal’s team but they’ve soldiered on.

However, it doesn’t mean that the club don’t need replacements. What the club need is someone exactly like Walter Kannemann this summer and despite the fact that he is 28, the Argentine will be a great addition to the club.

The Gremio centre-back has been exceptional for the Brazilian side. He honed his skills with Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simone at Argentinian club San Lorenzo before moving on to bigger and brighter things.

From there he moved to Atlas and then Gremio, which is where he has been since the summer of 2016. It’s at Gremio that Kannemann showcased some of his best work, which is why he is more than ready for a move to bigger things.

A talented centre-back by anyone’s definition of the word, Kannemann would suit perfectly at the heart of Arsenal’s defence. With his six-foot frame, the 28-year-old isn’t the biggest of the lot but he certainly isn’t the weakest either. Known for being aggressive, Kannemann is cool and composed in the tackle.

Like Sokratis, the Argentine loves defending but he’s also comfortable with the ball, cutting out passes left, right and centre. It’s a trait that Arsenal need especially now that Laurent Koscielny is on the wrong side of 30.

Furthermore, Kannemann can keep up with the fastest strikers in the world as he showcased during his time with Argentina’s national team.

Conclusion

Arsenal need defensive reinforcements. But unlike the heavy spending Manchester United, Manchester City and Liverpool, the Gunners cannot do that. Arsenal’s transfer budget is only around £40 million (Mirror), and that does give them a few problems.

That’s why someone like Walter Kannemann, who has a release clause of only £10.2 million, would be perfect for them (Daily Mail).
