Arsenal would progress further only by getting rid of this 30-year-old trickster who is in the twilight of his career

Why the time is right for Arsenal to offload Mesut Ozil

Arsenal have made a great start to the season, picking up two wins from their opening two games.

The Gunners also invested in the summer by signing Nicolas Pepe and several other stars. Dani Ceballos and David Luiz are the other big names to join them, and they should do better than the previous campaign.

Emery has a decent attack and midfield at Arsenal and it is the defence that needs the most work. Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette are quality forwards.

The return of Reiss Nelson should bolster the attack while summer signing Gabriel Martinelli is yet to show his best.

Mesut Ozil is another star attacker on Arsenal’s books but the German hasn’t been great under Emery.

The 30-year-old provided just two assists in the Premier League last season and racked up five goals.

The Washington Post (h/t Daily Star) reports that DC United are interested in the German and his agent had also visited the MLS side.

A move could be on in the January window and Arsenal need to sell the German as soon as possible.

The end of Ozil’s time at the Emirates?

Ozil joined Arsenal amidst a lot of fanfare as the German was one of the best attacking midfielders in the world.

However, the German has been inconsistent since moving to the Emirates and his abilities have been on a decline.

Emery needs all his players to put in a shift, even the attackers, and that is something that Ozil isn’t known for.

Ceballos can do a job as an attacking midfielder and he looked good in the win over Burnley.

The Spaniard is on a loan and it will be interesting to see if Arsenal can sign him permanently next season.

Ozil is 30 at the moment and he is reaching the twilight of his career. Sending him away now will save Arsenal on the wages front too, however, the report claims that the German has to take a sizeable pay-cut if he wants to join the MLS club.

Verdict

The former Real Madrid star was a great signing for the Gunners years ago but his time at the Emirates is close to done.

Arsenal have to send him off as quickly as possible and they have decent options to star in place of the German.
