Arsenal signing this versatile 23-year-old would freshen up their backline ahead of a crucial season

Arsenal opinion: Should the Gunners make a move for Mario Hermoso?

Arsenal have an important summer ahead of them with the transfer window open and clubs already making the most out of it, Unai Emery needs to make moves fast.

Sure they have the Europa League final coming up before their season officially ends but it’s time that the club at least starts making in-roads into a few moves.

Their top priority should be a centre-back and a central midfielder as they look towards replacing both Laurent Koscielny and Aaron Ramsey. While the Frenchman may still be at the club, the Welshman is on his way out and will be joining Juventus in a month or so.

It means that after 11 long years, Arsenal will lose their top scoring midfielder and that is an absolute shame. But to lose him for absolutely nothing is an even bigger blow.

Their first modern European trophy will guarantee them Champions League football next season and that is something Arsenal need. Playing in the Champions League will not only help them attract better players but it will increase their budget.

All this plays into various other deals and will help the club moving forward but they need reinforcements. As mentioned above, one of their top targets should be another centre-back and Mario Hermoso fits the bill.

English news outlet Football.London has reported that the 23-year-old has made Arsenal’s shortlist. And his performances over the course of this season have a lot to say about him.

Still only 23, the Spaniard is a versatile defender, who is capable of not only playing as a centre-back but also as a left-back.

However, it’s as a centre-back that he really flourishes, using a variety of skills and his agility to keep attackers at bay. Combine that with his work-ethic, passing nuance and a rather great sense of position, and it makes him a good replacement for Mustafi.

It’s a move that Arsenal have to make and with their defensive core ageing, a 23-year-old like Mario Hermoso will freshen up the side.

Arsenal need young blood and while they did add that in spades last summer, they need to repeat the trick. Mario Hermoso fits that bill and he’s exactly the kind of centre-back that the club needs now and in the future.

Football is and always will be the beautiful game. What every child understands, yet every adult struggles to, is that it is a game that defines the nature of the universe. But that's just me.
