Arsenal Opinion: Arsenal should make a move for Mikel Oyarzabal

Arsenal have defensive issues, but it’s not something that isn’t fixable. Adding new players would solve the problem but there are other positions that manager Unai Emery will have to reinforce as well, and that includes a new winger.

Their situation out wide may look comparatively good at the moment, with both Alex Iwobi and Henrikh Mkhitaryan doing well, but the club still needs reinforcements.

Barring those two, the Gunners have no-one else who can play out wide, with Danny Welbeck out injured for the season. To make things even worse, the former Manchester United star is out of contract and an extension has not yet been signed.

Hence, it leaves Arsenal with a massive conundrum, especially given the fact that Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s abilities are wasted out wide.

He is a striker and though the Gabonese is a willing participant, it’s a waste of his talent to play him on the flanks. This is why the Gunners should look towards Mikel Oyarzabal.

The 21-year-old has made quite an impact for Real Sociedad over the last few seasons, making his senior debut during the 2015/16 season. Since then, Oyarzabal has gone from strength to strength for the club, finishing last season with 14 goals and 8 assists.

This season has undergone a change but yet the Spaniard has produced 11 goals in all competitions so far.

However, that’s not why Arsenal should target him, although it is one of the many reasons that Mikel Oyarzabal would be perfect. Not only is he lethal in front of goal, but his ability in the final third is far better than the Gunners’ current crop.

While he isn’t the fastest wingers around, the Spaniard makes up for that with his technical ability.

That combined with his creativity, dribbling, set-piece superiority, stamina and defensive work rate should appeal to manager Unai Emery. Like most modern managers, the Arsenal boss likes his attacking players to do their fair share of defensive work. That’s something Oyarzabal does willingly.

His versatility to play anywhere across the midfield means Arsenal would get a top player. Moreover, they would get a wide creative player and someone who can help them achieve their goals in the near future.

Tom Landry once said "Football is an incredible game. Sometimes it's so incredible, it's unbelievable." Football is and always will be the beautiful game. What every child understands, yet every adult struggles to, is that it is a game that defines the nature of the universe. But that's just me.
