Arsenal signing this £36m Serie A wall would completely fix their leaky defence next season – opinion

Arsenal opinion: Should the Gunners make a move for Kostas Manolas?

Arsenal have conceded 51 goals so far this season. This shows how leaky their defence has been this season, even with the addition of Sokratis.

The former Borussia Dortmund man has made a difference to the club but that hasn’t helped. They have made it all the way to the Europa League final and will face Chelsea in Baku next month but things have to change next season.

Arsenal’s front-line is near perfect. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette have formed a sensational partnership for the club. But at the same time, scoring 72 goals in a season doesn’t help if your defence concedes 50 a season, especially in the race for the top-four.

The Premier League has clearly changed, and conceding 50 goals in a single season is unacceptable for any club. Things have to change and while Unai Emery has worked wonders, there is a chance he may not be able to do it without new additions.

Football.London has reported that AS Roma star Kostas Manolas is among Unai Emery’s favourites to replace Shkrodan Mustafi.

The German hasn’t had the best season with the club and that has affected the club negatively at times. It’s why a move for Manolas makes a lot of sense, especially with the club linked with a move for the Greek centre-back in the past.

It could be the perfect move for Arsenal and possibly more realistic one. Manolas would be a great partner for Sokratis. Fast, strong and confident on and off the ball, the Greece international epitomises just what Arsenal need.

Add that to a mere £36million release clause to his name and it makes a lot of sense.

Furthermore, while there might be questions about whether or not he can adjust to the Premier League, it should come with time. But Kostas Manolas’ mentality and aggressive nature will play a big part in helping him fit at the club.

However, Manchester United have also been linked with a move for the 27-year-old and that does complicate things (Express). Like Arsenal, the Red Devils have had a torrid time in the Premier League and will possibly finish in 6th place if results go against them.

Not only that, like Arsenal, they need defensive reinforcements and someone like Kostas Manolas would be perfect for both sides.

Conclusion

A move for Kostas Manolas would be absolutely perfect for Arsenal and the Greek international would by all accounts shore up their defence. It’s a move that the club have to make, especially if they want a future as a top- four or even a title-challenging club.
