Arsenal signing this French U21 star would go a long way in helping Emery replace Laurent Koscielny – Agreed?

Arsenal opinion: Arsenal should sign Dayot Upamecano

According to a report in the Evening Standard, Arsenal are interested in signing Dayot Upamecano as a replacement for Laurent Koscielny. The RB Leipzig centre-back is one of the most promising young centre-backs in Europe along with his French U21 partner Ibrahima Konate.

The duo shared the pitch in the European U21 championship and Arsenal would be making one of the best purchases of the summer if they can get this deal over the line after already securing the services of William Saliba, who has been sent back on loan to St. Etienne to continue his development.

Saliba and Upamecano have the potential to become the best centre-back pairing in the coming years. Upamecano is a fantastic athlete, as he’s very strong, a great passer and is capable of initiating attacks.

Arsenal are in desperate need of defensive reinforcements and have been in need of it for a long time now. They’ve got a fantastic attack and have added to it by getting Nicolas Pepe. They’ve also got Dani Ceballos from Real Madrid on loan, who is a crafty midfielder and will create plenty of chances for the front-three.

Their strength in midfield is admirable, with the tenacious Lucas Torreira. However, that defence will be a massive concern. Sokratis Papatathopoulos was fantastic last season while Bernd Leno adjusted to his new club quite well.

However, Rob Holding’s and Hector Bellerin’s injuries have been a real problem. They will definitely not be a part of their first couple of games this season.

Callum Chambers had a good season at Fulham but he mostly played in the midfield whereas Shkodran Mustafi is a defensive liability and it’s a surprise that he’s still at the club after so many below-par performances.

Conclusion

Unai Emery can’t go into this season without a good centre-back pairing, as this will force their attacking players to constantly over-perform. One of the reasons for their poor away form is the fact that they can’t depend on their backline and it cost them a spot in the top-four the last term.

Small margins will make all the difference and it was evident last season, as the Gunners just missed out on a top-four spot and fell short in the Europa League final. Upamecano would help settle those fine margins.
