Arsenal opinion: The Gunners should sell Mustafi amidst Fenerbahce interest

The Daily Star has reported that Fenerbahce is very interested in a move for Shkodran Mustafi. The Arsenal centre-back did not have the best season, and that has seen him heavily linked with a move away.

Things have gotten so bad that there are no signs of any change. The decline has been rather incredible for the World Cup-winning German international, with the £90,000-a-week not fulfilling his potential after getting the big move.

He arrived as a spectacular buy for the North London side, coming off a great season with Valencia and the German national side. Mustafi was then very highly rated and a rather aggressive defender and was expected to be the long-term heir to Laurent Koscielny.

His first six months were absolutely brilliant, with the German putting on quite a show. Since then, he’s been sliding down a very slippery slope, which has further affected the team.

This season has seen things take a turn for worse, with Mustafi really struggling, making a series of high-profile errors. That has effectively changed the course of Arsenal’s season, which in turn has hurt the club even further.

It’s why Arsenal have had links with William Saliba, Samuel Umtiti and Dayot Upamecano. And with links like that, the club needs to let go of a few players, given their rather meagre transfer budget.

The Mirror has reported that the club have around £40 million, which will change any plans that Unai Emery does have and it’s why they need to let Shkodran Mustafi leave. The German centre-back would at least command around £35 million, which would help Arsenal make an upgrade on their defence.

Not just that, the Turkish giants Fenerbahce have spent their fair share over the years, signing Nicolas Anelka, Emmanuel Emenike and even Raul Meireles. It will allow Arsenal to make a difference and more importantly, give Emery the money he needs.

Conclusion

There was a time when Shkrodan Mustafi was considered to be the heir to all of Arsenal’s defensive issues. He arrived with a lot of pomp but as time passed, Mustafi has become a liability and Arsenal need to move forward without him.
