According to the sales stats published by UK shirts/Jersey retailer UK Soccershop, Arsenal’s new marquee signing Ozil’s shirts outselling Madrid’s Bale’s shirts by 5 to 1 margin.
This is a phenomenal achievement considering the hype around Bale’s transfer saga and the world record fee involved in the deal. The pressure is already mounting on Gareth Bale to perform both on and off the pitch (commercially) and to justify the “costliest player ever” tag placed on him.
Real Madrid selling Ozil (to compensate for Bale’s fee) plays a big role in the shirt sales. Both the fans and the players including Cristiano Ronaldo and Sergio Ramos expressed their anger at their club management for selling their top play maker.
On the other hand, everything is going well for Arsenal. Even though Arsenal only gets a small percentage of the jersey selling money, this definitely increases their commercial value and may help them in securing good commercial contracts in future.
Simon Pretswell, managing director of UKSoccershop said,
‘While it would be untrue to say there is not an interest in Bale shirts, our sales data shows he is being significantly outsold by Mesut Ozil and is not attracting the same level of attention generated by Neymar when he transferred to Barcelona earlier in the summer.”
Other Local boys of Arsenal, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Jack Wilshere also have good selling record as they still maintain their positions in the top 10 selling list (in UK).
