Arsenal opinion: Why Arsenal should reignite their interest in Anthony Martial

Arsenal were linked with a move for Manchester United star Anthony Martial last season (ESPN), with the club looking to replace Alexis Sanchez.

No deal ever materialised, although the two rivals did come to an agreement regarding a Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Alexis Sanchez swap deal in January. The North London side followed that up with Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang’s arrival and that was that.

Martial ended up staying at Old Trafford and struggled to find a place in the team for the rest of the season but was one of the few players who did well in Jose Mourinho’s final six months.

That changed with the appointment of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, as Martial has continued to struggle. The Frenchman has the potential to do great things but has only shown flashes of that ability.

Martial has only played 25 games in the Premier League this season, but the 23-year-old is on par to beat a career best, with 10 goals so far.

It’s why Arsenal should consider making a move once again for the Manchester United star, especially if the Red Devils opt to bring in Joao Felix (Daily Mail) or David Neres (Sun).

Both the young stars play as left-wingers, which is Martial’s preferred position. This does give Arsenal a chance to convince the young forward to switch allegiances. The move would be beneficial to both sides.

For Arsenal, it would see them get a player with world-class potential and someone who can help out with goals.

It would also see them shore up their wingers, as the Gunners have depended heavily on both Alex Iwobi and Henrikh Mkhitaryan. While both players have done well, they have not been consistently performing for the club.

This has given Arsenal a few problems over the last few months, problems that could be solved with the addition of someone like Anthony Martial. For the Frenchman, it would be the new start that he really deserves, especially after the last few years at Manchester United.

With new manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer looking to rebuild Manchester United into a superpower in world football, Martial may not be a part of that plan.

Conclusion

Anthony Martial is a class act and a player who has struggled to make a significant impact at Manchester United, despite scoring just under 50 goals so far. The 23-year-old needs lease of life and that is something that Arsenal can provide him with.
