Arsenal Player Ratings: The Gunners Gun Down The Citizens At Their Own Backyard

It was an inspirational performance by Arsenal Wenger’s men who dug deep and earned a well deserved victory against the mighty Manchester City, the title holders, who have tortured them in recent times at the Etihad. Impressively enough, Arsenal have now faced City thrice this season and have been unbeaten against the champions. Here are the player ratings for the amazing Gunners.

David Ospina – 8.5/10

He was alert on the pitch and kept his cool during the pressure situation as Man City had three strikers and Lampard on the pitch forcing attacks after attacks. This performance would keep Szczesny on the bench for a while.

Hector Bellerin – 9/10

The youngster showed great appetite for the game and Wenger’s tactics were spot on, which protected the fullbacks from getting exploited. Bellerin was tireless as well.

Per Mertesacker – 9/10

He wouldn’t have found a better day to give one of his best performances. He was always on top of Aguero and read the game well. He even attempted a successful dribble to beat Aguero, something which delighted the Gunners. Unlike his usual shy self on the pitch, Mertesacker fought for the defence today.

Laurent Koscielny – 8.5/10

He had a great day as well, as he formed a tough parternship with Mertesacker. The Arsenal defence was solid today as they stopped a rampant Man City.

Nacho Monreal – 9.5/10

He did whatever he was asked for and more as he worked tirelessly, tactically and cleverly. He won the crucial penalty off Kompany in the first half which Cazorla converted. His positioning was top notch as well.

Francis Coquelin – 9.5/10

Well, not a foot wrong by the youngster today. He was all action, decisive and calculative in his approach. Wenger’s defensive and counter attacking setup helped him greatly as he found himself settled on the pitch.

Aaron Ramsey – 8/10

He had a decent outing on the pitch as his workrate was key for Arsenal’s counter attacking style of play today. Offered great support to the Arsenal midfield.

Santi Cazorla – 10/10

MOTM There you have it. He was absolutely phenomenal against the City side, which have always managed to dominate Arsenal. He was all over the pitch working hard for the team as well as creating chances and bamboozling the City defence and midfield with his trickery and flair. He stepped up with a coolly taken penalty and an inch perfect free kick assist to take part in both the goals Arsenal scored, hence asserting his decisiveness on the game.

Alexis Sanchez – 8/10

He did not score or assist today but he clearly played a key role as a counter attacker for the Gunners. His pace and work rate offered a clear outlet for through balls and Sanchez linked up well with his colleagues.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain – 8/10

He had a good game especially in the first half as counter attacking suited his style more. He was subsequently substituted in the second half as he tried on and was misplacing a few passes.

Olivier Giroud – 9/10

He had a great day as he scored a good striker’s goal latching on to a tempting free kick by Cazorla. His goal killed the game and it was job done for Arsenal. Giroud also had a nice celebration following his goal!
