Arsenal opinion: Emery has to keep hold of Granit Xhaka at all costs

English news outlet Sun, has reported that Arsenal star Granit Xhaka has been targeted by Inter Milan as the Nerazzurri look for new stars. The report further adds that Inter have stepped up their pursuit of the Switzerland international.

They believe that the 26-year-old midfielder would be the perfect man for their team and it’s a move that cannot happen. Arsenal haven’t exactly had the best debut season under Unai Emery, despite reaching their first European final for over 13 years.

It was a brilliant achievement and winning the clash against Chelsea would have given them Champions League football. That would count for so much more than the trophy ever would as a club like Arsenal need to be playing Champions League football.

However, in the end they collapsed and fell well short of Chelsea and Maurizio Sarri, losing in a horrific way. It showed why Arsenal need things to change and it has to happen sooner rather than later.

Before any new additions arrive at the club, Emery has to offload a few stars. Danny Welbeck, Petr Cech, Aaron Ramsey and Stephan Lichtsteriner have all left the club, with Ramsey joining Juventus once his contract officially expires.

That does leave a lot of holes for Arsenal to plug and it will not be an easy task. But losing someone as important as Granit Xhaka will further hurt the club and it is a move that the club will struggle to recover from.

The former Borussia Monchengladbach star has been a big figure at the club since his arrival in the summer of 2016.

He has played a key role at the club since then. Xhaka has even been handed the captain’s armband on a few occasions and is a real leader for the Gunners. However, what does make the £90,000-a-week star so important to Arsenal’s side is the fact that he’s their conductor.

Without his presence on the field, Arsenal often look lost and have struggled to move the ball forward effectively. Xhaka’s composure and passing range helps him dictate the game and he does it with style but he does have his issues.

He often loses his temper defensively unless paired with Lucas Torreira. That has happened on more than one occasion in the past but that isn’t a reason to let someone go.

Conclusion

Arsenal needs to keep the core of their current squad intact and that’s exactly what Granit Xhaka is at the moment. The Swiss international is a massive part of their team and losing him will earn them a lot of money but it’s just not worth the loss.
