Arsenal and Liverpool Stars Feature in the EPL Top Performers of the Week

On matchday 9 in the English Premier League, all the last year’s top four registered thumping wins, while Jurgen Klopp’s reign as a Liverpool manager began with a hard-fought 0-0 draw at Tottenham. Chelsea eased the pressure on Jose Mourinho with a 2-0 win against Aston Villa on Saturday while Raheem Sterling’s first-half hat-trick kept Manchester City top of the table with a 5-1 rout of Bournemouth. Alexis Sanchez ensured Arsenal maintained their second spot in the table with his seventh goal in four games as he kick-started a 3-0 stroll at Watford. Wayne Rooney ended his 11-month away-day goal drought as Manchester United secured a 3-0 victory.

Here are the top 5 performers of the week.

Raheem Sterling

Raheem Sterling justified his enormous price tag with a brilliant first half hat-trick against Bournemouth on Saturday. After a stuttering start to his Manchester City career, Sterling answered his critics with a man of the match performance against the newly promoted side. With Sergio Aguero out for at least a month due to injury, Sterling is going to have to score consistently for City to maintain their form in the Premier League. Through his first eight appearances, Sterling had just one goal and one assist to his credit, still there is no one who can question his exceptional talent.

Georginio Wijnaldum

Georginio Wijnaldum justified his £14.5m price tag by grabbing a fantastic four-goal haul against hapless Norwich.  His performance helped Newcastle secure their first win of the season and eased the pressure on Steve McClaren. The former PSV midfielder has had a major culture shock since his move from a championship winning side to a struggling Newcastle side, but it was Wijnaldum who had the biggest impact on a match this weekend.

Alexis Sanchez

One more week and one more brilliant performance by the Chilian star. Sanchez has now scored 10 goals in his last 6 matches for club and country. He looked menacing every time he got the ball, tormenting Watford defense with his direct running. Wenger would have liked to give him a rest right now but given his hot streak, a break might just be too disruptive for his form.

Jamie Vardy

Vardy, even in his wildest of dreams would have never thought that he would be competing for the Premier League golden boot come October end but looking at his form, he is definitely a serious contender now. He scored another two goals in a comeback draw at Southampton, as he personified the never give up spirit the Foxes have shown this season under Claudio Ranieri.

Simon Mignolet

Jurgen Klopp’s first match in charge ended in a goalless draw against Tottenham on Saturday, but he would have been most pleased after realizing that at least he has a decent keeper on his hands in the form of Mignolet. He was excellent against Spurs making superb saves from Clinton Njie and Harry Kane. It was his performance that helped Klopp secure one point in his first match at White Hart Lane.
