Dominic Calvert-Lewin scored twice as Everton defeated Newcastle United 2-1 at St. James’ Park on Saturday in the Premier League.
Carlo Ancelotti is yet to taste defeat as the Toffees boss and his side took the lead rather fortuitously in the 13th minute when a deflected shot fell to Calvert-Lewin, who scored from six yards out.
Everton did look vulnerable from set-pieces throughout as Andy Carroll and Joelinton were a real handful in the box for them.
Newcastle had the ball in the net following their best moment of the game, a superb piece of play by Jetro Willems who found Miguel Almiron in the centre. While his shot came off the post, Andy Carroll scored on the rebound, only to be flagged offside.
The Magpies’ sustained pressure paid off after the break as they did manage to find the levelling goal from a free-kick, as Carroll headed down at the far post for Fabian Schar, who instinctively finished from close range.
It was Everton’s turn to be denied by the offside flag on the hour mark when Holgate followed up a corner routine but the defender knew he was in the wrong place as he applied the finish.
However, the scores were level for just eight minutes as Calvert-Lewin was found by Richarlison at the back post and the England Under-21 restored Everton’s lead just after the hour mark.
Newcastle manager Steve Bruce threw Dwight Gayle and Christian Atsu to pinch an equaliser but Everton held firm and registered back-to-back victories under Carlo Ancelotti.
After the 2-1 victory over Newcastle, here’s how some Everton fans reacted on Twitter.
