Preston North end fans will not be looking forward to this weekend, as on Tuesday evening they had to endure a 6-0 thumping at Newcastle in the EFL Cup.
However, both teams will likely field different teams, here are the likely line-up for Newcastle United.
Darlow
He is now seen as Benitez number one goalkeeper, and whilst his performances continue in the current way, he will stay in the side.
Anita
Benitez has rotated between Yedlin and Anita so far this year, but currently looks to favour Anita a bit more. With competition so fierce for places at St James park, he will be well aware that the young American is snapping at his heels.
Lascelles
Newcastle captain and perhaps a future England international. He has really stepped up this season and has started to prove himself as the best central defender in the Championship. The rock on which the Newcastle defence is built.
Clark
His partnership with Lascelles has grown as the season has gone on and Rafa Benitez will want them to continue their good form as Preston look to load the box with long throws.
Dummett
Despite Haidara and Lazaar both returning from injury recently, Benitez will favour Dummett on the left hand of defence. He will be looking to put in a good performance to keep his place in the line-up.
Ritchie
He will be disappointed with his goals tally having scored double figures in his last Championship campaign. But he is dangerous for Newcastle and Benitez will persevere.
Shelvey
Really, one of the most important players in the black and white of Newcastle. He is too good for this level and shows that on a weekly basis.
Hayden
Hayden provides a good base for which a lot of Newcastle attacks are built. Shields the defence well before giving it to Shelvey to work his magic.
Gouffran
The French winger is likely to come back into the team after being rested in midweek. He brings a good balance to the Newcastle midfield, and Benitez seems to favour him over Atsu.
Diame
He has much-needed pace and power to the Newcastle front line without Gayle. But Newcastle fans aren’t overly keen on him and have dubbed him ‘Sissoko mk2’. He did score two goals in midweek, however, so perhaps he is returning to form.
Mitrovic
Has been unlucky not to have played more this season, but after an injury to Dwight Gayle, he is likely to play. He scored 3 against Preston on Tuesday night and will be looking for a repeat performance.
