An Ode To Steven Gerrard: One Of Liverpool’s Greatest Love Stories Is Coming To An End

An Ode To Steven Gerrard

After 17 years  and several priceless moments, one of modern-day football’s greatest love stories is coming to an end.  Liverpool football club’s golden boy will step out in the colours of the club he supported as a boy for one last time at Anfield  against Crystal Palace this Saturday– a prospect which seemed unthinkable to Liverpool fans  across the globe but it is only a matter of time before it turns into reality.

Tickets are being sold at a premium as the demand simply dwarfs the available number with fans from around the world arriving at Liverpool to catch a glimpse of the man who epitomizes Liverpool football club more than anyone else.

Gerrard

During his tenure at Anfield, the Huyton born midfielder has seen the rise of so many great players, the likes of Fowler, Owen, Torres and Suarez to name a few – They have all come and gone, but he stuck to his guns and has single – handedly carried the club on his shoulder’s at times.

Gerrard’s outstanding volley against Olympiakos, bullet header against Milan that sparked one of the greatest comebacks in sporting history, stunning long-range equalizer against west ham in stoppage time are some of the events that represent magic moments in the minds of every Liverpool fan, goals that have forever etched his name in Liverpool folklore.

Of course, his brief flirtation with Chelsea might have upset a few sections of the Liverpool supporters, yet his constant reassurance to himself and subsequently to the fans on why he chose to stay and what means more to him has only helped strengthen the already unbreakable bond he shares with his fans.

The fact that boos from a section of Chelsea fans  were drowned out by applause from all around the stadium  at Stamford bridge last weekend shows that Stevan Gerrard is well-respected around the world by people who appreciate true football.

Come this Saturday, Anfield is going to be a sea of emotions. Gerrard himself admitted that when he said “I don`t know what it`s going to be like. I`ve been dreading it because I`m going to miss it so much,”

“The plan is to try and keep it together and avoid the tears.

“If someone had said when I was going to the academy at eight years old that you`re going to play 708 games and win the trophies, along with the highs and lows, I`d have taken that.

“The supporters have been incredible since day one. I`ve had cruel lows and incredible highs. Their support has never changed in 17 years. That will be the most emotional goodbye.”

In football, just as in any other walks of life, all great things have to come to an end and even the almighty Liverpool skipper is no  exception to that rule. Liverpool fans  will move on and so will the man.

But, nonetheless, Steven Gerrard – the one and only Liverpool’s own.
