Amidst Tottenham interest, it is time for Manchester United to renew £65,000-a-week star’s contract – agreed?

Why Manchester United Must Renew Anthony Martial’s Contract At All Costs

Anthony Martial is undoubtedly a new-age superstar for Manchester United but his contract is set to run out in a year. Although he continues to be an important figure at the club, United are yet to initiate contract talks with him.

As is the case with most promising stars in the world of football right now, there have been potential suitors lurking around for his signature. Until and unless United extend his deal, he will continue to get linked with other clubs and he might even leave Old Trafford in the summer. That is a situation United must avoid at all costs.

Over the years, Martial, who currently earns £65,000-a-week, has endured several ups and downs with the Red Devils. Despite showing initial promise, the young star endured a slump in form for quite some time. However, from there on, he managed to turn things around and establish himself as one of United’s most reliable players.

The Red Devils have not exactly enjoyed a spectacular campaign so far but Martial has been one of their most impressive players through it all. He has made a strong impact while starting and has also been influential as an impact sub.

He has seen a significant drop in his game time ever since Alexis Sanchez completed a high-profile move to Old Trafford last month but that has not stopped him from showing his worth. Even at times when he’s come off the bench, Martial has been one of United’s better players on the field.

At a time when their attack has faltered on most occasions, the 22-year-old has been a beacon of light and it comes as no surprise that clubs like Tottenham Hotspur are vying to land his services.

Given the player’s importance to the club, it is indeed baffling as to why they have not extended his deal yet. The biggest problem is that Martial, Rashford and Sanchez all prefer to play on the left-wing and that is causing quite a bit of concern for Jose Mourinho.

After all, it would be highly unwise to rob Sanchez of regular game while paying him hefty wages. Meanwhile, there is a lot of competition between Rashford and Martial as well – both promising young stars.

Hence, leaving the club might seem like the better option for Martial at this point but there is no doubt that it will come as a major loss for United. If they do not extend his contract immediately, they could stand to lose him over the summer.

While United would want to keep him from joining domestic rivals Spurs, there won’t be much they can to do to change his mind at that point. Thus, offering him an extension now would be better than to engage in a tug-of-war for his signature later on.
