Aguero, Bravo And More – 3 Talking Points From Manchester City’s 2-1 Win Over Burnley

Pep Guardiola will be a relieved man as Sergio Aguero and Gael Clichy helped them to all three points in a nervous game at the Etihad just a day after their defeat at Anfield. Sean Dyche’s Burnley were given a lifeline early in the game as midfielder Fernandinho was sent off for his horrible challenge on Johann Berg Gudmundsson at the half hour mark. City played more than an hour with 10 men and even as Ben Mee gave them a small scare, they managed to hold on to their one goal advantage to take all three points from this game. It was a game that City could have easily dropped points and Guardiola will know that he still has some work to do ahead of the rest of the season. Here are three talking points from this game:

Manchester City lack depth:

Fernandinho fouls Johann Gudmundsson of Burnley, leading to his red card

The new manager at the Etihad, spent over £100m in the summer transfer window and was expected to help Manchester City to the title in his first season at the club. But with constant injuries to the squad, and lack of personnel in key areas, the Citizens have failed to keep up in the race with Chelsea at the top of the table. With less than 48 hours between the two games, Guardiola decided to rest the likes of David Silva and Sergio Aguero for this game as he bought in Jesus Navas and Kelechi Iheanacho to try and win this game. But both failed to have a telling impact and the manager needed the first team duo to get the work done. Fernandinho picked up a red and the manager had no real options from the bench to cover for him not just in this game but for the next few games. Surely, the squad at the Etihad is a bit weak and Guardiola will have to take care of it if he wants his team to compete for the title.

Sergio Aguero the saviour:

Sergio Aguero (L) scores past Burnley's Tom Heaton

Not for the first time this season, Argentine striker Sergio Aguero, helped Manchester City out of a tough situation, to win all three points, this time against Burnely. He was dearly missed in the first half of the game but since he was on, City looked a different side and gave Burnley more headaches as they were finally able to crack them after some stern resilience. Aguero is the top scorer for the club in the league at the moment and is their biggest goal threat and Guardiola will know the he cannot afford to lose him for crunch games. Surely, Sergio Aguero is the saviour that is keeping City in the hunt this season.

Claudio Bravo a liability:

Though Guardiola wanted the Chilean at the Etihad for his ability with the ball at his feet, Bravo is just not helping Manchester City in the other departments of a shot stopper. In his time in England, Bravo has cost City a few goals already and he is not closer to being any safer this season. In this game against Burnley, his mistimed punch gave Ben Mee the chance to get back into the game while he was also constantly nervous, handling balls that were played into the box. Manchester City are fighting hard for the title but Bravo, with his form, or the lack of it, is a liability at the club this season.
