Norwich City beat Ipswich Town 3-0 at Carrow Road in the East Anglian Derby to go two points clear at the top of the table. Onel Hernandez scored one and Teemu Pukki scored a brace to seal the win for Daniel Farke’s men.
It was a high-temper game when Jon Nolan’s late challenge on Max Aarons late in the first half brought up a reaction. Ipswich boss Paul Lambert was sent off after confronting Canaries coach Chris Domogalla.
Norwich took the lead after 82 seconds when Hernandez was on hand to finish from close range. It was their fastest goal since 2011.
Pukki fired in a second from inside the box, assisted by Emi Buendia in the 65th minute to make the game safe for the hosts. The striker scored 15 minutes later when the same combination worked again. It was his 20th goal of the season as he gears up to lift his team towards promotion.
In a way, Norwich were slightly fortunate to be winning this game 3-0, having only had three shots on target. They only had 47% possession as Ipswich gave an account of themselves and took full part in this interesting derby. Lambert’s men had 15 attempts on goal, but only two on target, epitomising their profligacy in front of goal.
At the end of the day, clinical finishing came to the fore and Farke’s men are on top of the league once again. Their opponents on the day remain at the bottom.
It is time for the Canaries to believe they can get back to playing Premier League football next season. For Ipswich, relegation seems to be getting on them as they are currently nine points off the safe zone.
Norwich play Preston away in their next game, while Ipswich have a tough game against playoff hopefuls Derby County.
