Why Liverpool must go all out to sign Jorginho from Napoli in the summer
Liverpool’s quest for new midfielders continue and with the 2018 summer window arriving, recent reports are suggesting that the club are likely to pursue a deal for Napoli midfielder Jorginho.
With Emre Can expected to leave Anfield and join Juventus once the season comes to an end, there is no doubt that Jurgen Klopp will need a new player in the middle of the park. And to that end, a move for Jorginho has seemingly excited the fans and it is something the club will prioritise in order to strengthen their team next season.
Before deciding whether or not Jorginho is the right choice for Liverpool, let’s take a look at their current midfield scenario. They have Georginio Wijnaldum, Jordan Henderson and Emre Can as regular starters but with Can’s future uncertain, Klopp will have a void to fill in the centre of the park if Can decides to leave the club.
They will have Naby Keita arrive from RB Leipzig but to boost squad depth, Liverpool will need another midfielder and to that end, Jorginho seems like a good choice. However, there is also a reason to believe that signing him could serve a greater purpose.
When one takes a look at Keita’s and Jorginho’s performances, it becomes quite clear that the duo could work wonders for a team.
For the longest time, Liverpool have lacked a technically gifted midfielder who is effective at controlling the game. Although Henderson has essayed that role, he is quite injury-prone and the Reds need a reliable and consistent player in that area.
Furthermore, Jorginho’s skill-set can work splendidly with a player like Keita. The RP Leipzig man is known more for his energy and attacking intent and that could brilliantly complement the Italian star’s guile and power in terms of shielding the defence and pulling the strings to dictate the proceedings in the middle of the park.
In fact, Jorginho currently provides a solid foundation to the Napoli attack and considering how strong Liverpool have been up front, signing him could prove to be an excellent move for the club.
Hence, regardless of how much competition they may face, Jorginho is a player Liverpool must actively pursue in the summer. The £25.2m-rated 26-year-old can add so much value to the Reds and he will prove to be an asset to the club in the days to come. With Keita’s impending arrival, the duo can help the Merseysiders launch a stronger effort to land the Premier League trophy next season.
