A much-needed presence – Newcastle United should have pushed harder to sign this 22-goal Championship ace

Why Newcastle United missed a trick by not signing Jarrod Bowen

In July, a report from the Chronicle Live had claimed that Newcastle United were interested in signing Hull City star, Jarrod Bowen.

Jarrod Bowen, 22, had a brilliant 2018/19 Championship campaign that saw him score 22 goals and provide four assists in 46 appearances. During the 2017-18 campaign, the forward made 37 starts and five substitute appearances, scoring 14 goals and providing one assist in the process.

The 22-year-old is one of the exciting players in the Championship and it wasn’t a surprise to see him attract interest from some Premier League clubs, including Newcastle United. But the Magpies have made a big mistake by not signing Bowen from Hull City during the summer transfer window.

A prolific young forward, Bowen has picked up where he left off too. He made a slow start to the season in Hull’s defeat at Swansea City, but has since scored three goals and assisted once in four Championship games. The 22-year-old also scored in the Carabao Cup tie against Preston, although the Tigers bowed out of the competition on penalties.

And while Bowen goes from strength to strength, Newcastle continue to struggle in front of goal. The Magpies did spring a major surprise by beating Tottenham 1-0 away from home last weekend but the matter of fact is Steve Bruce’s side were completely dominated by the north London side.

It was all down to Tottenham’s lack of cutting edge in the final third rather than Bruce’s defensive master class.

With Ayoze Perez and Salomon Rondon having departed in the summer, Bruce needed to replace a lot of goals and he signed Joelinton and Allan Saint-Maximin.

Both Joelinton and Saint-Maximin aren’t prolific goalscorers by any means and they don’t have previous Premier League experience as well.

That’s exactly where Bowen could have been a smart signing as he has a little bit of Premier League experience and showed last season at Hull that he has an end product too.

Bowen is a youngster with so much potential and would’ve been an excellent addition for Newcastle, as he could have added extra creativity and flair in attack.

The Leominster-born player is predominantly a right-winger but can also play on the left or through the middle as a secondary striker.

Having previously worked with him at Hull, Bruce knows the wide man’s strengths and weaknesses and could have brought him in to add a much-needed cutting edge to his attack.

Verdict

As things stand, however, Newcastle failing to sign Bowen in the summer could come back to haunt them if they struggle to break teams and score consistently in the first half of the campaign.
