A long-term Lloris replacement? Tottenham signing this 6ft 3in Serie A giant would be a big statement

Tottenham opinion: Thomas Strakosha can be the man to replace Hugo Lloris

The ESPN (h/t Calciomercato) have revealed that Tottenham have started the search for Hugo Lloris’ successor and believe that Lazio star Thomas Strakosha is their man.

The 23 year old has been a mainstay at the back for the Biancocelesti since his arrival, showing his class over the course of last season, as Lazio finished in a Europa League spot.

While Calciomercato have further revealed that the Biancocelesti are unwilling to let their star go, it’s a move that Tottenham have to make happen. While Hugo Lloris has been amongst the Premier League’s best goalkeepers since his arrival, the Frenchman is growing older.

With age comes a change for a large majority of footballers, with their reflexes slowing down. Lloris has seen his reflexes considerably slow down over the last six months or so, which isn’t a big surprise given the fact that he is 32 years old.

And he has just come off the longest season in his career, which included a full Premier League season and no summer break because of World Cup 2018. As captain, the 32-year-old played every game barring the draw to Denmark, and he missed the start of the season because of the World Cup.

However, all this simply points towards the fact that the Tottenham captain is coming towards the end of his peak. While replacing him will be a tough job, few goalkeepers in the world would come as accomplished as Thomas Strakosha.

At the age of 23, the Albanian star has already played well over 150 games in his club career, making his debut for Lazio as a teenager and appearing over 100 times for them.

While experience is a key aspect for any goalkeeper, Strakosha also makes use of his rather impressive reflexes, agility and more importantly, his height.

While he isn’t the tallest of the lot at 6’3”, the Albanian has hit the sweet spot when it comes to the height vs agility battle. His footballing brain reacts rapidly and Strakosha’s body responds as fast, helping him make more than his fair share of key saves for Lazio.

That combined with his ability to play out from the back, his composure and his conditioning, makes him an irresistible option to consider. In fact, the 23-year-old made such an impact in his second full season with the club that Liverpool were chasing him during the 2018 summer window (Mirror).

However, no move materialised and the Reds signed Alisson Becker from AS Roma. It’s time for Tottenham to upgrade their goalkeeper and few players would be as good as Strakosha.
