A job well done – Here’s why Wolves must pat themselves on the back for loaning out this 22-year-old star

Wolves should be happy with the departure of Sylvain Deslandes

As confirmed via Wolves’ official website, Wolves defender Sylvain Deslandes has joined Bulgarian top-tier side Lokomotiv Plovdiv on loan for the remainder of the campaign with an option to make his move permanent next summer.

The 22-year-old was apparently not in manager Nuno Espirito Santo’s plans moving forward and Wolves decided that it was in the best interests of all parties to send the versatile defender out on loan for the ongoing season.

Deslandes, who made his move to Molineux from French outfit Caen back in the summer of 2015, has struggled to establish himself as a key figure at the club over the years, registering only 8 first-team appearances in all competitions.

Having made his senior professional debut for Wolves against Barnet in the League Cup in August 2015, Deslandes had to wait until April 2016 to earn his first league start for the club, which eventually came against Hull City

However, he has been completely frozen out of the first-team fold for over two years, with his last appearance coming against Bristol City in the League Cup two seasons back.

The former French youth star has found himself lost in the cold at the Black Country outfit more often than not, spending time on loan at Portsmouth and Bury in League One, as well as at Spanish third-tier club Jumilla last season, prior to his loan move to Bulgaria this summer.

Realistically, to say that Deslandes was down the pecking order at Molineux would be somewhat of an understatement, given that he wasn’t anywhere close to being in the first-team picture for over two years.

The fans might have even forgotten that he was still at the club due to his lack of involvement and few would rue his departure this summer.

To put things into perspective, Wolves decision to send Deslandes out on loan looks perfectly justified, given that he had absolutely no chances of breaking into the club’s Premier League squad.

To that end, it wouldn’t have made any sense for Wolves to simply keep him at the club for the sake of it and pay him wages for doing next to nothing.

Interestingly, the loan deal for Deslandes also includes an option for the Bulgarian side to make the move permanent next summer and Wolves will be hoping to get the out-of-favour defender off their books for once and for all.

As for the player, Deslandes’ career at Molineux had come to a standstill but he is still very young at 22 and has time on his side to settle down elsewhere and eventually take steps towards fulfilling his potential.

The Cameroon-born star might have failed to make the grade in England but the level of competition in Bulgaria is not really the same and a drop to the lower league should help him get his career back on track.

All in all, this loan move looks like a fair settlement for all parties involved and Wolves hardly have any reason to regret his departure.
