Manchester United news: Red Devils should sign Raphael Varane

According to L’Equipe via ESPN, Real Madrid’s defensive rock Raphael Varane is considering leaving Los Blancos this summer. Varane joined the Galacticos as an 18-year-old in 2011 and his since made 268 appearances for the club in all competitions.

A defender of Varane’s quality is rarely ever available on the market and with him wanting to leave, Manchester United should swoop in to sign the defender in the summer.

The Red Devils have previously been linked (h/t Bleacher Report) with a move for the Frenchman and they must revive their interest.

After a torrid time under Jose Mourinho, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has helped the Red Devils regain belief as they now sit just two points below 4th-placed Arsenal.

The Norwegian has lost just once in the Premier League since his arrival and with good form and a bit of luck, they could be in the Champions League again next season.

The Champions League qualification will be massive for the Red Devils in their pursuit of top transfer targets this summer. United will have to be consistent until the end of the season, especially in defence where reinforcements in the summer are an absolute necessity.

Chris Smalling, Phil Jones and Victor Lindelof have done brilliantly under Solskjaer but to compete for the big titles, United would need a world-class centre-half in place of the English duo and Varane is an incredible option.

The Frenchman has won almost everything there is to win with both club and country and has immense experience in the big games. Varane, at just 25 years of age, has played over 300 games for club and country, and knows how to deal with massive pressure.

A fast and intelligent presence in the box, Varane would bring in some much-needed leadership to the United back-line and could play a massive part in the club’s attempt to bring back the glory days to Old Trafford.

Signing Varane, as tempting as it may seem, will not be cheap for Manchester United, especially with the Frenchman’s contract running till the summer of 2022.

The report from ESPN reveals that Varane has a 9-figure release clause and any move for the 25-year old will break the world record fee of £75million that Liverpool paid Southampton for the services of Virgil van Dijk.

Conclusion

Signing Raphael Varane would be the easiest decision taken by Manchester United or any other club who can afford him. Varane’s quality and experience speaks for itself and with the Frenchman being only 25 years old, any investment on him will be worth every penny.
