Man City have done well by extending the contract of this unsung German ace who has been key to their successes

Earlier, the German international’s contract was due this summer before he decided to prolong his stay for four more years.

Gundogan- the unsung hero of City

If it weren’t for the injuries he suffered since his move to Premier League in 2016, Gundagon would have been a much better player than he is now. Nonetheless, his sheer willingness and hard work enabled him to overcome the odds attacked against him.

Ilkay Gundogan

Despite a horrendous debut season, the ex-Borussia Dortmund quickly ingrained his position under Pep Guardiola in the following seasons, racking up 12 goals and 15 assists.

The 2018/19 campaign turned out to be his best season yet, helping Guardiola overcome the loss of then-injured Kevin de Bruyne and also playing a pivotal role for the Cityzens to achieve the domestic quadruple.

The 28-year-old can fit in different roles in midfield, and the Cityzens have a done brilliant job by extending his stay at Etihad.

David Silva

Cityzens boast a plethora of midfield options at the moment, yet counting on the Gundogan, who has established himself as one of the best central midfielders, doesn’t go askew for the Spaniard manager.

The 33-capped German international’s best position would be the attacking midfielder role, keeping in mind that David Silva would be leaving the Sky Blues at the end of the next season.

Guardiola has found himself in the receiving end with the  UCL competition over the course, and good squad rotation would help him break the deadlock in this season.

Final Verdict

The Sky Blues haven’t been the productive side in the recently-ended transfer window, except the signing of Rodri. Guardiola didn’t have to spend big given a balanced squad at his disposal.

The midfield prowess looks unbreachable at present and the contract extension of Gundogan would help the Cityzens to continue their reign in England’s top tier as well the long-evasive UCL title.
