Sheffield United Opinion: Why Luke Freeman would be a good signing?

According to a report from Sky Sports, Premier League newbies Sheffield United are close to completing the signing of Luke Freeman from Queens Park Rangers.

The 27-year-old attacker scored nine goals and assisted eight more in 48 matches last season as QPR finished 19th in the Championship. He was voted as the QPR Supporters’ Player of the Year last season.

Now, Luke Freeman is set to become the Blades’ first summer signing since winning promotion back to the Premier League. He is likely to start of many new faces walking through the front door of the club, as Chris Wilder plans for survival in the first season back in the top-flight.

Wilder has done an incredible job since arriving at the Bramall Lane a couple of years ago.

He has guided the Blades back to the top-flight for the first time in 12 years after winning two promotions in three seasons in West Yorkshire. The test for United will be to negotiate the first season back with the big boys and Wilder undoubtedly needs to add more quality and depth to the squad.

One of the most areas that the 51-year-old tactician must reinforce is his attack, which isn’t up to the required quality to beat relegation in May 2020.

Mark Duffy is the only no.10 in the team and while he played a crucial role in United’s promotion campaign, he is 33 and lacks the pace to trouble the opponents. Thus, signing a player of Luke Freeman’s quality makes a lot of sense.

Formerly an Arsenal trainee, Freeman generally operated on the left flank for QPR during the 2018/19 campaign but is equally adept operating in the no.10 role.

As Wilder plays a system which doesn’t include wingers, Freeman would compete with Duffy for the no.10 spot behind the two strikers. The 27-year-old has been a consistent performer in the Championship for the last few seasons and looks more than ready for the step up.

The Dartford-born star is a very good passer of the ball and has a good range of passing with which he can pick out passes in the final third of the pitch.

He is quick and can make darting runs with the ball into the opposition penalty area, which makes him a dangerous threat from midfield. Freeman is also a decent dribbler and an excellent outlet to have during counter-attacking threats.

Verdict

From Freeman’s point of view, Sheffield United would be the right club for him. All in all, the 27-year-old attacker should thrive in Wilder’s system and the Blades could benefit from his precision and creativity next term.
