85.8% pass accuracy – Everton signing this 21-year-old sensation would add real quality

Why Everton should move for Dennis Geiger to bolster their midfield unit

According to claims from German outlet Sport1 via Sport Witness, as relayed by Liverpool Echo, Everton have been credited with an interest in Dennis Geiger, who currently plies his trade with Hoffenheim in the German Bundesliga.

As well as Everton, reigning Premier League champions Man City are also keeping close tabs on the 21-year-old central midfielder, who has been one of the standout performers for Hoffenheim in the ongoing campaign (Sport1 h/t Liverpool Echo).

Geiger is yet to find the net for Hoffenheim this season but he has already contributed with 3 assists in 9 league outings, with the youngster playing a key role in the 2-1 victory over Bavarian giants Bayern Munich last month.

The Toffees could have their work cut out in convincing Dennis Geiger to complete a move to Merseyside in the upcoming transfer window, with Man City boss Pep Guardiola believed to be a big fan of the German’s abilities (Sport1 h/t Liverpool Echo).

Born in Mosbach, Germany, Geiger rose through the youth ranks of 1899 Hoffenheim and featured regularly for the reserves before making his senior professional bow for his boyhood club during the 2017-18 campaign.

Having started 20 Bundesliga games over the course of an impressive breakthrough season, Geiger failed to capitalize on a promising start as recurrent injuries restricted his involvement to just a couple of league starts in the previous campaign.

However, the Hoffenheim academy graduate has made a return to the first-team fold at the Rhein-Neckar Arena since the start of the 2019-20 season, reclaiming his position as one of the mainstays of the midfield under new manager Alfred Schreuder.

Geiger, who has represented Germany at all age-group levels from U15 to U21, is yet to make his senior international debut for his nation.

As per whoscored, the 21-year-old has averaged 31.3 passes per game at an accuracy percentage of 85.8%, including 2.2 key passes and 1.8 crosses per game in the Bundesliga this term.

To put things into perspective, Everton would bag a real coup if they manage to beat off competition from Man City in the race to sign the coveted midfielder.

Despite the Toffees completing a permanent deal for Andre Gomes on the back of a successful loan spell from Barcelona the last term, the departure of Idrissa Gana Gueye to PSG continues to haunt them.

In fact, Everton effectively brought in players to replace Gana Gueye in the summer, with Fabian Delph and Jean-Philippe Gbamin coming through the door.

While Delph has certainly been a positive influence so far, Gbamin’s debut season at Goodison Park looks all but over, following a long-term injury.

Tom Davies has brought in some positive energy to a lethargic-looking midfield ever since he has been reinstated in the playing XI. However, Morgan Schneiderlin has once again been a massive disappointment with his poor run of form.

Verdict

Suffice to say, Everton already have five players competing for two central midfield roles every week but they can certainly do with some further reshuffling of their options in that area.

To that end, Geiger could possibly add another dimension to Everton’s midfield with his creativity and eye for key passes, as evident from the statistics.
