77 Home Games Without A Loss – Can Conte Do What Mourinho Did With Chelsea?

Chelsea have won four from four in the Premier League without conceding

Chelsea’s home Stamford Bridge used to be the toughest ground to pick up a point for visiting teams back in the days. During Jose Mourinho’s first and second stints in charge, the club set a 77-match unbeaten record at their ground under the Portuguese until the 2014/15 season.

Before then, Chelsea recorded the highest unbeaten streak which still holds to date by going 86 matches without a loss, until it was broken in 2008. But all the bragging rights of the club’s home being the toughest to secure even a draw at got shattered ever since.

Last season alone, their worst in recent history, Chelsea won just 5 home games, drew 9 and lost another 5. However, their resurgence this season looks to be tipping the storied Stamford Bridge for glory and pride once again, and it could become a stronghold once again.

Of their 7 league wins, 4 have come from their home ground, while the only blight is the 2 – 1 loss to Liverpool. No club in the top flight has picked up more points at home than Chelsea (12), with Manchester City, Tottenham, and Leicester City the closest with 11 points apiece. Bournemouth, Liverpool, Arsenal and Everton have all managed to pick up 10 points at home.

Chelsea currently sits in 4th place after the 10th round of league games, and with more than half of their 23 points secured at home, should it be concluded that Antonio Conte is slowly turning Stamford Bridge to a fortress? West Ham, Leicester City and Manchester United – 3 teams that finished in top 7 last season have all failed to pick up a single point from the Bridge.

Of all 21 goals scored, 13 have come at home, while only 3 out of 9 conceded were at the Stamford Bridge. On 3 occasions, Chelsea have kept clean sheets at home, highlighting how solid they are at the back in their own backyard. And they have fired on all cylinders up front at home too.

With 14 more home games left and a possible 42 points to contest for, securing at least 36 points at the Stamford Bridge, and 30 away from their home comfort won’t only hand them a comfortable top 4 spot, but bagging the title is very much possible.

The last time Chelsea won the league, they didn’t lose a single game at home as they cruised to 15 (45 points) wins and 4 draws (4 points), accumulating 49 of their total 87 title-winning points at the Stamford Bridge. Suffice to say the league was won right at home, considering 49 out of a possible 57 home points were picked up.

The early signs this term are good and very promising, and with this level of consistency and spirited home performances put up, the London Bridge could be rebuilt and made firm all over again.

The defence has looked very assuring since the switch to a 3-man system, and that foundation will determine how solid this season will be for Chelsea. It looks strong already, and we are probably seeing a fortress in the making again as far as the Stamford Bridge is concerned. Not only is it the key to a top 4 finish, it could unlock the title once again.
