5 worst deals completed by Fulham over the past decade including the signing of Arsenal midfielder

The transfer period can be tricky for any club as they often invest heavily on a player hoping that he would significantly improve the team. While some signings do manage to make their mark, some fail miserably.

Newly promoted Premier League side Fulham also have had their brush with some very poor transfers in recent years, and here we take a look at the five worst transfers of the club over the last decade.

Kostas Mitroglou

Expectations were high when the Greek star was brought in from Olympiakos for a fee of £12m in January 2014. But Mitroglou failed to score a single Premier League goal for Fulham. The striker managed to make just three appearances for the Cottagers, owing to a knee injury. 

He had a very successful loan spell at Olympiakos the following season, scoring 16 goals in 24 games and also flourished during his loan stint at Benfica in the 2015/16 campaign, following which the Portuguese outfit signed him on a permanent deal. He left Benfica to join French side Marseille last summer. A deal that had the potential to turn out into a great one for Fulham, ended up being a big failure.

Jozabed Sanchez

The Spaniard, who arrived at Craven Cottage in the summer of 2016 from Rayo Vallecano, failed to cope with the rigours of Championship football as he struggled to make his mark for Slavisa Jokanovic’s side.  

Having failed to settle at his new club, the 27-year-old central midfielder returned to Spain, joining Celta Vigo on loan in January 2017 before making the move permanent last summer after making just eight appearances for Fulham.

Thomas Eisfeld

The German attacking midfielder signed for Fulham from Arsenal in 2014 for £1.3m. Regarded as a bright young talent during his youth days at Borussia Dortmund, Eisfeld struggled to hit the ground running and never really got going at Fulham.  

After a disappointing start to life with Fulham, he returned to his homeland, joining VfL Bochum on loan in February 2015, having made just 9 appearances for the Cottagers. The 25-year-old made the move permanent in the subsequent summer and has established himself as a regular with the Bundesliga 2 outfit ever since.  

Eddie Johnson

Fulham signed American striker Eddie Johnson from FC Dallas in January 2008. But little did they know what a colossal failure the deal would turn out to be.  

Johnson, in his three years at Fulham, played just 19 games and failed to score any goal. He was loaned out to Cardiff City and Preston North End, but those moves turned out to be fruitless too. Johnson then returned to America where he made a name for himself at Seattle Sounders. 

Ragnar Sigurdsson

Sigurdsson arrived from Russian club Krasnodar in the summer of 2016 for £4m, following his exploits with the Iceland national team in the UEFA Euro 2016 in France.  

However, the centre-back proved to be a major dud at Craven Cottage. Sigurdsson never really managed to work his way into manager Slavisa Jokanovic’s plans and after just 17 Championship appearances, he left for Rubin Kazan on loan last summer before Russian side Rostov signed him on a permanent deal in January.
