Five players you absolutely need in your Fantasy Premier League teams

There comes a time in the season when certain players are in such great form that they become absolute essentials in our FPL teams. At this point in time, when the season is only days away, let’s take a look at some players from each position who fall in the must-have categories. These players finished the last season with aplomb and have been in great form in the pre-season as well.

Goalkeeper

David De Gea (6.0) – Manchester United

Now, every FPL manager plays the GK situation differently. Some use the rotating door policy where two keepers are selected and rotated each week according to their fixtures. These keepers, who are generally not from top-6 teams, aren’t expected to keep many clean sheets but they give a lot of save points.

Another way to go is with a premium goalkeeper who falls in a set-and-forget category as you intend to play him week in week out. You have a bench fodder as your second keeper to compliment his premium partner. And premium keepers don’t come any more premium than the big Dave, do they?

The Spaniard gave whopping 172 points in the last season which included 18 clean sheets and made a mindblowing 115 saves. United have been miserly in the defence for the past 4 seasons and David De Gea has played a big role in that. With an easy fixture list, the fact that the Red Devils play only two teams from the top-6 in their opening 10 games, also points to the direction of going for arguably the best goalie in the world. However, doing so could burn a hole in your pocket.

Defenders

Andrew Robertson (6.0) – Liverpool

The man from Scotland ended the last season in scintillating form when he only played for half of the season and still managed to accumulate 111 points, including 5 assists and 1 goal. His involvement with the Liverpool forwards in the final third makes him a hot property in FPL world.

Liverpool have also strengthened their defence by signing Alisson from AS Roma and this should help Roberston record more clean sheet points too.

Midfielders

Mo Salah (13.0) – Liverpool

No player in the entire game is more essential than the Egyptian king. He scored a record-breaking 32 goals last season and amassed an unprecedented score of 303 points. This made him the costliest player in the FPL universe. But that shouldn’t affect your plans as he is more than capable of getting similar returns this time around.

Even if he doesn’t get such high returns and flops, you can always sell him in the latter part of the season and utilize your funds elsewhere. But if he fires and you don’t have him in your team, then you would fall behind 50% of all FPL managers (yes, that’s the number of people that own him).

Then you would have to perform a complete surgery of your team and take multiple hits to bring him to your side.

Forwards

Kun Aguero (11.00) – Manchester City, Aubameyang (11.0) – Arsenal

These two have been quite inseparable in terms of form. Both have looked brilliant in the pre-season and scored loads of goals. While Sergio Aguero is a seasoned Premier League player who scores 20-plus goals year after year, Aubameyang impressed with his 10 goals and 4 assists, which he notched up in just 4 months of the previous campaign.

You could go with either of them and play 2 premium midfielders or go for them and weaken your midfield. It’s a personal choice for every FPL manager. And the best thing is their teams face each other in the opening GW of the season.

After that, till GW8, City face none of the top-6 teams while Arsenal travel to Stamford Bridge in GW2. The only aberration to Aguero’s place in our teams is Gabriel Jesus. The Brazilian was used in tandem with Aguero during the 2017/18 season and that’s a scary prospect. You wouldn’t want your premium forward to not start a game. There is no such risk with the Gabonese international, however.
