5 Flops Signings By Manchester City In Recent Times

Pep Guardiola is off to his best ever start to a domestic season at the Etihad and his Manchester City side are now the firm favourites to lift the Premier League title this season. The Citizens were one of the biggest spenders in the last couple of summer transfer windows and though their performances this season have justified their investment, they have often spent on players who do not belong at the highest stage.

Here are five such Manchester City signings in recent times that have been plain embarrassing:

Stevan Jovetic

Having cost £22m, Jovetic was expected to be a star under Mauricio Pellegrino back in 2013 but three seasons, one of which was out on loan, and 44 appearances later, he remains one of the most unproductive signings by the club, as he managed to score just 11 goals during his time in England.

Roque Santa Cruz

Having joined Manchester City in 2009 for £17m, Cruz came to Etihad with loads of expectations from the fans but he completely failed to deliver, making just 24 appearances during his stay with the club. The Paraguay striker managed just 4 goals before being permanently sold to Malaga in 2013. It would be fair to brand his stay at Manchester City as a flop.

Alvaro Negredo

Negredo joined City in a £22.5m deal back in 2013 but competing with the likes of Sergio Aguero was not what he would have wanted to do. He made just 49 appearances for Man City, and had to be offloaded, first on loan and then on a permanent basis. He managed to score 23 goals for the Citizens and it is not a bad strike rate considering the number of starts he was afforded during his time at the Etihad. He cannot be considered as a complete flop but the Spaniard’s time in England at that time was not as productive as he would have hoped for.

Javi Garcia

One of Manchester City’s most bizarre signings in recent times, Garcia joined the club back in 2012 for around £18m and though he made 53 appearances in two seasons, he was a player despised by the fans. He was a constant presence in match-day squads, albeit coming off the bench but his displays drove him out of the club just two years later.

Scott Sinclair

Currently having an impressive time with the Scottish Champions, Sinclair spent three long years at Manchester City, for half of which he was sent out on loan. He got just 13 games under his belt, failing to compete with the quality players at the Etihad and was sold to Aston Villa in 2015. Surely, a Man City career that failed to take off.
