4 goals, 4 assists – Newcastle completing a move for this gifted Ligue 1 star would be a terrific choice

Why Newcastle United should make a move for Clement Grenier

Newcastle United were left heartbroken last week after they were dumped out of the FA Cup in the fourth round by Watford. With no more hopes of silverware in sight, the Magpies would now look to achieve Premier League survival.

It has been an underwhelming campaign so far for Rafael Benitez as Newcastle are currently fighting tooth and nail to stay in the top-flight. The club has been hit by injuries to a number of key players and Benitez should try adding a few new faces to increase his squad depth before the transfer window slam shuts on Thursday.

An area which needs addressing is the attack, with a No.10 desperately needed at the club to compete as well as provide cover for Ayoze Perez. Perez is the only creative player Newcastle have in their ranks and the Spaniard’s inability to produce the goods consistently this season have hit the club badly.

Hence, Benitez must strive hard to sign a creative playmaker in the closing stages of the transfer window and he should target Rennes star, Clement Grenier.

Clement Grenier, 28, has enjoyed a good season with Rennes, chalking up 4 goals and as many assists in 28 games across all competitions. He has played in various positions across the midfield but has thrived in the role behind the striker.

The addition of the Frenchman would help the Magpies provide some much-needed steel in the middle of the pitch. His agility, creativity and composure in possession could turn out to be the perfect foil for Mohamed Diame and would give the Newcastle midfield the energy and thrust they have been lacking all season.

Known for his technical ability and dribbling skills, Clement Grenier is also an expert set-piece taker. His quality crosses into the box would be a treat for someone like Salomon Rondon. Furthermore, the former Lyon star can play as an attacking midfielder, a central midfielder or even in a holding role if required. For Newcastle, this versatility will come into play on more than one occasion.

Hence, the addition of a player like Clement Grenier could be a masterstroke from the Spanish tactician in order to invoke new energy in the Newcastle side and also increase the depth of his team. However, it might also turn out to be a risk as the player has no prior experience of playing in the Premier League.

But given Grenier’s ability and vast experience of playing in the Ligue 1, it might be a risk worth taking for the Newcastle United manager.
