Budding Superstars – Three Youngsters Who Take The EFL Championship By Storm This Season

It’s well known that those seeking promotion will need a hardcore of old(er) players who know this division well and are ready for what is a gruelling 46-game league season.

That said though, sometimes a team needs a less expected ‘wow factor’ and that often comes from the younger players in the squad. Here we look at three players, all 20 and under, who can make a big impact this year:

Ruben Neves (Wolverhampton Wanderers)

The very highly rated 20-year-old shocked a lot of people when he signed for Wolves. His performances had marked him out as a player of Premier League but he has decided that the Championship side is for him.

An incredibly gifted central midfielder, Neves has already played 20 times in European competitions for Porto and was a part of the Portuguese under-21 squad which finished as runners-up in the 2015 Euros. He is cool, composed and excellent on the ball. Even at his tender age, he is expected to run games for Wolves this term. Expect him to take the league by storm.

Ryan Sessegnon (Fulham)

The word is about now alright! Fulham’s 17-year-old full-back turned winger was superb in the second half of last season and only recently signed his first professional contract with the club.

Defenders will be watching out for him now and he is not the unknown quantity he was when first making his breakthrough. His progress has been unreal and he will reveal more and more about his game as this season goes on. Him appearing in the England squad at next year’s world cup is not beyond the realms of possibility.

Adam Armstrong (Bolton Wanderers)

The Newcastle United striker is out on loan again, this time at the newly-promoted Trotters and a much better season is expected now. His loan in this division at Barnsley last season wasn’t a personal triumph despite a decent start, though he is known to be capable of much better than that.

While at Coventry as an 18-year-old, Armstrong netted 20 goals in 40 games and in fact had that form when the club were going backwards overall. Had they stayed right at the top end of the league, a 30-goal season would have been achievable for him in League One.

With England, Arma has won the under-17 Euros twice and is now an under-20 world cup winner too. The chance to play up front every week and all the supply from pal and fellow Geordie, Sammy Ameobi can only be a good thing for him and his new club.
