Jose Mourinho has already hinted that Manchester United will only sign 2-3 players in the summer transfer window.
United ended the season second on the table but a staggering 19 points adrift of champions and cross-town rivals Manchester City, who shattered numerous Premier League records on their way to gathering 100 points.
If the Red Devils are to have any chance of challenging for the title next season, they need to add quality players to their squad or they risk another season without getting their icy hands on the Premier League trophy.
So, here are three top transfers United should look to complete in the summer.
Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder Fred has been heavily linked with both Manchester United and Manchester City. The player has a release clause of €60m (£52.89m).
The game against Watford on the final day of the Premier League was Michael Carrick’s last league match. Carrick will hang up his boots after the FA Cup final against Chelsea this weekend and join Mourinho’s backroom staff from next season onwards.
Carrick’s departure will leave a huge void in the team and Mourinho has a big task to fill it with a top signing. Shakhtar’s Fred could be the one to replace the veteran English midfielder as the Brazilian fits the bill perfectly at United.
Fred is a deep-lying playmaker as such, who sits in his half and breaks down attacks. He also initiates counter-attacks with his top vision and exquisite passing abilities. The Brazilian can act as a perfect foil alongside Nemanja Matic and Paul Pogba in a midfield three.
Fred could just be the ideal man to replace Carrick at Old Trafford.
The left-back position has been an issue ever since Patrice Evra departed. Mourinho has used Ashley Young at left-back and while the veteran England international has done admirably well, the United manager needs to buy a natural left-sided defender.
Luke Shaw has endured an inconsistent campaign, while Daley Blind’s time at United looks to be up.
Tottenham’s Danny Rose is a reported Manchester United target after falling down the pecking order behind Ben Davies this season. Gutsy and aggressive, Rose is a quality left-back who is capable of putting some dangerous crosses into the box.
The England international is at the peak of his career and was one of the reliable performers for Spurs last term. With Young not being a natural left-back and Shaw being undependable, Rose’s addition makes complete sense as he would provide more dynamism and attacking thrust on United’s left flank.
A right-back is needed as an immediate replacement for Antonio Valencia. While Valencia has been a consistent performer under Mourinho, the Colombian’s one-paced game failure to put crosses into the box have made him a very predictable player.
Above all, he will turn 33 in August, which clearly signals that an upgrade at right-back is desperately needed. Though Matteo Darmian is present, it is clear that he is not the man for the job.
AS Monaco’s Djibril Sidibe is a modern-day right-back who can carry out offensive duties as well as defensive duties with equal diligence and gusto.
Sidibe’s positioning and reading of the game help him defensively, while his pace and composure on the ball allow him to maraud forward. Sidibe is a complete package and United must sign him this summer.
