Three Signings Manchester United Should Make In Summer To Strengthen Themselves

Jose Mourinho has clearly indicated that he will sign at least one midfielder this summer when the transfer window reopens. The title seems like a distant dream this season, with Manchester City searing away but that didn’t stop United from signing Alexis Sanchez from Arsenal in January.

Sanchez’s signing was a statement of intent from Mourinho as he bids to finish 2nd and continue challenging in the Champions League and the FA Cup. So with the attack department sorted, the United manager could prioritise signing a couple of midfielders in the summer, and probably a defender too, in order to strengthen the squad ahead of the 2018/19 season.

With Michael Carrick retiring at the end of the season and Marouane Fellaini yet to sign a contract extension, here are three players United could target.

Jean Michael Seri

Manchester United were linked with a move for Nice midfielder Jean Michael Seri during the January transfer window. Seri, who was very close to moving to Barcelona at the start of the season, could be a fantastic addition for the Red Devils.

Carrick is hanging up his boots after the end of this season, and keeping that in midfield, the Nice midfielder could be eyed by Mourinho.

Seri is a midfield dictator with good crossing and passing abilities. He is not exactly a defensive midfielder but is much more than that. His arrival could see Paul Pogba in a more advanced role.

Mateo Kovacic

One player who is simply being wasted at Real Madrid is Mateo Kovacic. The Croatian boasts of immense talent and potential but in order to take his game to the next level, he needs regular game time. At Real, he is devoid of regular opportunities; so come summer, the player could consider leaving Bernabeu.

Mourinho should jump the gun if Kovacic decides to leave Zinedine Zidane’s team. The midfielder is a good dribbler, offers creativity and keeps the ability to link defence with attack.

Djibril Sidibe

AS Monaco’s title-winning campaign owed much to the attackers. While many players have left the club for pastures new, Djibril Sidibe is one of the very few players still plying their trade for the club.

Sidibe, signed from Lille in July 2016, has been a reliable and a composed player on the right. He is defensively sound and is good in the attack as well. It is the right-back’s meteoric rise that must have surprised many.

United skipper Antonio Valencia has made the right-back position his own in the last couple of years. Valencia is strong, agile, quick and composed as a full-back but at 32, Mourinho should think of the future and sign Sidibe in summer.
