Three Signings Newcastle Should Look To Complete In January

Although there’s little doubt Newcastle will make signings in the January transfer window, what sort of players they would sign perhaps depends on who owns the club by then.

Mike Ashley has promised funds, though they are likely to be extremely limited by Premier League standards, whereas the rumour surrounding Amanda Staveley’s potential takeover is that she had earmarked £450m for the club; £300m to buy it and another £150m for transfers over the next two years.

For now, we must assume signings will be kept at realistic levels, the following three players could be needed and deals could be completed:

Cenk Tosun (Besiktas)

The Turkish international may swap one black and white side for another at the turn of the year, and it would be a welcome move according to majority of Toon fans.

Rafa Benitez has plenty of options at No.9, though they are more or less much of a muchness and so while that means there is always cover, the fact none of his three options stand out means none are of the desired quality. Dwight Gayle, Joselu and Aleksandar Mitrovic are all of a similar ability and arguably none can match Tosun.

8 goals in 23 games for Turkey reads really well, as does his 7 in 11 appearances this season for Besiktas. Even more impressive though is that he has scored 3 goals in 3 Champions League games and would handle the quality of the Premier League without any issues.

James Maddison (Norwich City)

The sort of No.10 Benitez is looking for, as we’ve written about here numerous times, is the Steven Gerrard type. In other words, someone big and strong enough to help out the midfield two when required but be up with the attack in the blink of an eye. Maddison fits that bill.

His lovely finish to win the East Anglian derby on Sunday will have added something to his transfer fee but the Canaries’ demands are probably not enough to put Newcastle off.

Alphonse Areola (Paris Saint-Germain)

The Parisien is flying high right now, keeping goal for PSG, but moves are afoot for the owners at the Parc de Princes to keep signing ‘superstars’ and his position may be weakened in the transfer market.

Benitez has already shown an interest in the ‘keeper and was desperate to get a new No.1 before the season started.  Rob Elliot has been in decent form but has a bad injury record, while the Toon may eventually be willing to let Karl Darlow go should they sign a new ‘keeper.

Areola would be a wondeful signing for Newcastle given the current situation in the goalkeeping department.
