Stats Analysis of Heung-Min Son vs Chelsea: Tottenham’s key performer

Tottenham Hotspur were at their scintillating best in the London derby against Chelsea and beat them 3-1 at the Wembley Stadium. It was a game where Mauricio Pochettino’s tactics were spot on from minute one. Maurizio Sarri could only watch that unfold in front of his eyes and wasn’t able to change the dynamics of the game.

It was Chelsea’s first defeat of the season, hence, this performance can be deemed as a one-off. But for Spurs, it was the performance of the season. Every player contributed to the cause, especially the front and the midfield players. The goals were scored by Dele Alli, Harry Kane and Heung-Min Son.

Here’s an analysis of Son Heung-Min’s performance against Chelsea:

Stats Analysis – Heung-Min Son

There was a pre-match debate about where Son would play and many felt the South Korean would start on the left wing. But Pochettino had other ideas in his head. The Argentine played with a 4-4-2 formation, having a diamond midfield and two strikers up front. Harry Kane was supported by the South Korean star.

It helped the 26-year-old to make runs in between the centre-back and the full-back on the left-hand side of the Chelsea defence. David Luiz couldn’t match his pace and Marcos Alonso was worried more about moving forward rather than tucking in and helping his defensive partner out.

Taking some stats into account, Son attempted three dribbles and succeeded in two of them. He had a total of five attempts on goal – two off target and three on target, one of them being a goal. He missed two big chances on the break which might have made the scoreline look comprehensive. The South Korean even supplied one key pass on goal.

Fair to say it was a tremendous performance from a player who is a darling among the Tottenham fans. His runs, direct approach with the ball and deadly finishing terrify the defenders at every instant. If he stays consistent alongside the other talented players, Spurs have a chance of winning a trophy this season.

Chelsea were under-par on Saturday, but the way Tottenham started the game and kept the pressure on, the Blues were made to look bad.
