Three Reasons Why Real Madrid Should Not Be Written Off From The Champions League This Season

This footballing season has brought us plenty of excitement, uncertainties as well as huge surprises. While many small clubs have successfully managed to defy the odds and exceeded expectations, there has been an equal number of big clubs who have failed to meet their expectations this season.

Real Madrid’s demise definitely tops the list of huge disappointments this campaign! Following their impressive campaign last season under Zinedine Zidane where the Spanish giants recorded their 12th European triumph as well as being the first club to successfully retain their Champions League trophy since its inception in 1993, Los Blancos have completely fluffed their domestic campaign this season.

Real Madrid are currently sitting 3rd in La Liga, 16 points behind table-toppers FC Barcelona whilst being already knocked out from the Copa Del Rey. Therefore, Champions League remains their only hope for a silverware this season. But having been drawn against PSG in the knockout stage, the expectations are rock bottom prior to their encounter this midweek.

However, considering the Champions League pedigree that Real Madrid possess, writing them off just yet might be a big mistake, as Zinedine Zidane’s side have shown time and time again in the past that they are still capable of coming back from even the worst of situations.

Here are three reasons why the fans and pundits shouldn’t write them off just yet, in the coveted Champions League this season.

They Still Boast Of Quality Players

We are generally quite familiar with the phrase, “form is temporary, class is permanent” and that might be the case with Real Madrid this season.

While they may not have been the best team in Europe this season, Los Blancos still boast of some of the best footballing talents in the world. With the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Gareth Bale and Toni Kroos present in the starting lineup among many others, it’s highly likely that the European champions will once again challenge for the Champions League crown.

In fact, most of these players, despite failing miserably in the domestic competitions, have fared quite well in the Champions League group stages so far, with Ronaldo in particular netting an impressive 9 goals in just 6 games.

Their Domestic Form Doesn’t Mean Anything

When it comes to the Champions League, the domestic form doesn’t really matter as Europe’s prestigious tournament is a completely different ball game altogether.

In fact, even during Zidane’s first season in charge, Real Madrid were still trailing behind Barcelona in the title race but that didn’t stop the Frenchman from claiming the Champions League at the end of the season. Therefore, their miserable domestic campaign shouldn’t be taken into consideration as Los Merengues hunt for their 13th CL triumph this season.

They Know How To Prevail Against Top Sides

Last but most importantly, Real Madrid is a team which knows exactly how to play its game against some of the top teams in Europe, which has been one of the main reasons behind its unmatched success in the European competitions throughout its illustrious history.

The Spanish giants are entirely capable of dismantling the likes of FC Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Juventus or any other top team in Europe right now, meaning they’ll still be hailed as the favourites when they host an in-form PSG at Santiago Bernabeu this midweek.
