3 Reasons Why Arsenal Should Sign This £20m Clinical Finisher

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is spending some time in Brazil amid the World Cup, as the pictures suggest, but that does not mean that he is keeping away from the transfer market. On the contrary, he is very much aware of the latest developments in the transfer market and he knows which are the positions in his team that need reinforcements. Last season his team suffered for the lack of a clinical striker as Olivier Giroud proved to be insufficient at crucial times and Wenger has all the intentions to change the scenario this time around.

There are marquee targets that he is looking after and Porto player Jackson Martinez is one of them. The Colombia striker has been a long time target for Arsenal and rumours have again started surfacing that the Gunners are considering a £20m bid for him and have opened talks with Porto over the weekend.

“I know that there have been discussions, but still no agreements,” said Martinez.

“My agent is taking care of my future, right now I’m at the World Cup and only after the World Cup I’ll evaluate proposals.”

We take a look at three reasons why we feel that Martinez to Arsenal would be good business.

Decent finisher

It is obvious that Jackson Martinez is not a flash name as some of the other players that Arsenal could go for. The London club also has players like Mundzukic, Balotelli and others in their radar, but these players would come with a substantial fee. In the cutthroat world of the transfer market, landing players of this calibre would be a troublesome experience for Arsenal, something that they are known to avoid. In this scenario, someone like Jackson Martinez would be ideal. He is capable of doing the job perfectly and he has all the attributes of being a good finisher. Flashy names are also known to disturb team balances at times and Arsene Wenger could never let that happen, considering the strict disciplinarian that he is and Martinez would fit the bill perfectly at Arsenal.

Tactical versatility

With Jackson Martinez in the side, Arsene Wenger may give Giroud the much needed rest, which he absolutely needed last season, but never got. That would just increase the productivity of the French striker and make them a potent team. In certain cases, he may also pair Martinez with Giroud upfront and go for that kill, especially when the team is trailing. Martinez would bring in Arsenal a whole new set of possibilities and that would delight the manager from a tactical point of view. Jackson Martinez would certainly not complain if asked to sit on the bench at times and the team would function smoothly.

Financial aspect

Last season was a revelation for Arsenal as they signed Mesut Ozil from Real Madrid for a huge sum of money, something which they have not done for a long time. Signing another top striker would give as much burden on the finances of the club and Wenger would not like that. Jackson Martinez would come to the club at a much lower wage that some of the top stars of the game and for Arsenal, who believe in socialism in wages, that is an important aspect to consider while choosing the player, making Martinez a lucrative deal.
