3 Reasons Why A Loan Move For This €45.5m Manchester United Star To Everton Could Save His Career

Memphis Depay

After leading PSV to a title win since 2008, and topping the Eredivisie goalscoring charts with 22 goals in 30 games, it made sense that an EPL switch to Manchester United was a right step up the ladder of progress as a youngster for Memphis Depay.

The talented Dutch international, rated at €45.5m by the CIES Football Observatory, arrived Old Trafford to much acclaim and hype, commanding £25million in transfer fees in the summer of 2015, and eventually having the third-highest shirt sales in the world as he gained widespread popularity.

Unfortunately, Memphis didn’t hit the ground running as expected, and neither van Gaal or Jose Mourinho looks able to get him playing his best football.

With a lack of regular playing time and the stiff competition within the United ranks also hampering his chances, a loan move could do the trick.

Reports emerged that Everton are keen to have the 22-year-old on loan for the rest of the season, and here are 3 reasons why a temporary switch to Goodison Park will help Depay’s Manchester United career

Ronald Koeman

Not that the former Southampton manager is a magical career reviver of some sorts, but getting to work under such a manager known for his knack of developing talents might just be exactly what such an embattled player needs at this point in his career.

That the Everton chief is also Dutch and had seen Depay rise to stardom back home gives him added advantages as he has had first-hand experience watching a player who was once touted as the “next Ronaldo”.

Depay’s disciplinary shortcomings are well known, and Koeman’s iron grips could help straighten this erratic youngster. Manchester United’s number 7 needs the guidance of such man-manager following his troubled EPL career. It will come very handy.

A new challenge and atmosphere

While it is not expected that Depay would walk straight into Everton’s starting XI, he has a higher chance of doing so than remaining at Old Trafford and waiting for an opportunity that isn’t forthcoming.

At the Merseyside club, the challenge is a new one entirely, and the quality of the club means he isn’t taking a far step back in his career. He gets practically the same level of exposure United offer, but in a new environment.

And as we have seen with the likes of Jordan Ibe, Jack Wilshere, and Joe Allen who are excelling in their current sides following a summer switch, a different setup could help Depay get back on his feet.

Another club, another chance to start again

Depay still has his qualities intact, though his confidence is surely bruised following a poor start to life in the topflight.

In a loan move to Everton, the winger has a perfect opportunity to reflect on his disappointing one and half season, open a new chapter and start all over again.

There isn’t anything motivating him at the Theater of Dreams, and as such the only opportunity to start afresh will only come from elsewhere. Everton is a perfect place to do just exactly that.

Memphis is on Manchester United books until 2019, and if he is ever to make anything great out of his contract with the Red Devils, a loan deal at Everton would provide much-needed solace and be a temporary exit from his current troubles. This loaded gun waiting to be shot will be in the right hands at Goodison Park.
