3 Reasons Why Tottenham Should Avoid Signing This English International Star

Tottenham are reportedly interested in the services of one of the best midfielders from last season. Spurs want to sign Danny Drinkwater from Leicester and the club will be buoyed by the fact that the 26-year-old English star rejected a new contract from the Foxes.

The London side had brought in a couple of big named players but Mauricio Pochettino would be looking to add more quality and depth to his side considering the club are going to play in the Champions League and would want to finish higher than their third-placed finish from last season.

Drinkwater was at the heart of the Leicester midfielder last season and helped them win the Premier League title but Claudio Ranieri would want to avoid losing another midfielder after seeing N’Golo Kante leave the club for Chelsea.

Spurs might have the money to spend and bring in Drinkwater but Pochettino should stay away from the Englishman and here are three reasons why.

They already signed Victor Wanyama

This might be the biggest reason why Tottenham should not sign Drinkwater, the club did bring in Victor Wanyama and him, along with Mousa Dembele and Eric Dier would be fighting it out for the two places in midfield.

Sure you would want more competition in the side but Drinkwater is not better than the trio of midfielders stated above and simply paying over the odds for an English midfielder who won the league would smack of desperation from Pochettino rather than a smart sensible buy which the Argentine is known for.

Spurs have a lot of quality coming through the ranks

Tottenham are known for giving chances to their youngsters and Pochettino did recently say that he would keep the best talent in the team rather than loan them out to other clubs. This means players such as Josh Onomah will get a chance here and there to impress and if Drinkwater comes into the side, most of these youngsters will not get a chance to perform.

Drinkwater is a good player, there is no doubt about it but Tottenham would not want to stifle the growth of their youngsters. Pochettino and company have worked really hard to fix the Tottenham youth system and based on the potential some of the academy players have, they could end up being Tottenham stars in a few months.

Drinkwater only had one good season in the Premier League

This might be up for debate but the English star only did well in the Premier League winning season and also in the latter half of the 2014-15 season. That might not be enough to ensure he performs at the optimum level at Tottenham also.

The club doesn’t exactly play the same style of football as Leicester and not having a preseason behind him with a new club would severely affect his ability to gel into the side now. Not that it is impossible but it isn’t like Mauricio Pochettino to wait this long and complete a signing.

We could be wrong though and Pochettino could bring in Drinkwater but he would not be the best option for Tottenham by a long shot.
