It’s very sad when you see an icon leave the club after a couple of subpar years because of age, injuries, or the pride of a new boss that just doesn’t seem comfortable with the veteran.

But, as this is considered as a business, as it is getting more and more normal to see these kinds of things happen as years go by, and it’s getting more rare and uncommon to see stars retire with their clubs, as they often leave for a more lucrative deal on lesser important tournaments in order to get some minutes before finally hanging the cleats.

A player who has been on a roller coaster for most of the season is Manchester United’s Wayne Rooney, as the skipper got off to a mediocre start of the year but since being axed by Jose Mourinho, he has shown a lot of improvement, even earning a starting spot every now and then again.

But there’s still a chance of Rooney winding his boots up by leaving the club at the end of the year, so if he does so, the Red Devils need to have a backup plan and make a move for a huge star in order to stay relevant, so let’s discuss three possible Rooney replacements.

Antoine Griezmann

There’s no need to introduce this guy, as he’s been on the shortlist for the Ballon d’ Or over for the past couple of years or so, and he has shown to be an outstanding talent and hardworking player since his days at Real Sociedad.

Showing more and more maturity as years go by, the Atletico de Madrid and France star has stated that he has no intentions of leaving the club unless Diego Simeone also leaves, but you know that a big pay check could easily change that matter, and he’d probably be the best signing that Manchester United could do.

James Rodriguez

James is yet another talented player who has been having an awful time due to his boss, as Zinedine Zidane doesn’t like to throw him on the pitch and has even ignored him on crucial matches in the UEFA Champions League.

The Colombian is still pretty young and his prime is ahead of him, so making a move out of Santiago Bernabeu needs to be his biggest priority right now, and the Premier League seems like the perfect tournament for him, being a Kevin de Bruyne type of player that can really make things click for the Red Devils.

Pierre – Emerick Aubameyang

This would be another major signing for the Red Devils, as Aubameyang has shown to be one of the best scorers in the world since his arrival to Signal Iduna Park to play for Jurgen Klopp at his Borussia Dortmund.

Dortmund has been known for being a sell first club, and even if they don’t plan to let the prolific striker out of the team, a big investment could help ease that transaction, and the 27-year-old is playing the best football of his career, so you know the Glazers could be more than willing to break the bank in order to sign him.
