Leeds United are in a decent position in the Championship this season, finding themselves at third place in the table with 30 points from 17 games, three points behind leaders Norwich City. They started the campaign in terrific fashion but in the past month or so, the performance level has dipped a bit.
This is partly down to injuries to key players at wrong times and the lack of squad depth which has forced manager Marcelo Bielsa had to manage the situation rather than making straight swaps.
However, the goalkeeping scenario is different. Bailey Peacock-Farrell has played every game so far and hasn’t been able to convince much. The Northern Ireland shot-stopper isn’t stamping his authority, which could have helped the back-line as well.
Furthermore, with a severe injury to second-choice keeper Jamal Blackman, who is back to his parent club Chelsea, the Peacocks would require a new player for the position. Hence, they should look for someone who can not only act as a backup, but also keep Peacock-Farrell on his toes.
Here are the three goalkeepers Marcelo Bielsa’s men can target during the winter window:
Heaton was the first-choice at Burnley until he got injured in September last year. Since then, the experience shot-stopper has witnessed Nick Pope and now Joe Hart take his place. As a result, he is way down the pecking order at the moment.
If fit, Heaton could have been in Gareth Southgate’s plans for the World Cup squad. Hence, the quality is admirable and the experience is invaluable. Leeds United would do well to get him in the January window.
Stockdale is a goalkeeper who was born and bred in Leeds. He was in talks with the club this summer, but a deal could not be agreed upon h/t (Leeds Live) Birmingham City wanted to offload him to lighten the wage bills and loaned him out to Southend United.
Therefore, it is clear that the 33-year-old would be available on a cut-price deal in the winter window and Leeds should take advantage of that.
Leeds United have been linked with Westwood a number of times in the past years. (Leeds Live)
The Irishman has been down the pecking order at Sheffield Wednesday, hence, the Peacocks can revive their interest and get the 34-year-old.
He is a quality stopper with experience that will really aid the team.
